Your experience with the SSN?

My fiancée enter the US May 29th. We went to the SSN office and introduced her paperwork on the 31st. We were told that they have to wait 10 days to make the request because of a hold from Homeland Security. They did so and it worked, but now Homeland Security has another hold that the SSN office doesn’t understand. They’re trying to figure it out since yesterday.

The problem for us is that in Pennsylvania you need SSNs to get the marriage license… so we’re on waiting mode here and want to do something, if within our reach, before we run out of time…

Did any of you experience something similar to this and if so:

What happened?

Did you do anything to speed up this particular situation?

Thanks,

No idea why they would have a hold on it because, the only normal waiting time, is due to the systems getting updated just so the name will show up on their database. You still have time to get it, as your deadline is going to be 2 weeks before the date on her i-94. IF you are afraid that you may not be able to get married due to the lack of SS#... you can always drive up to the nearest state where they don't require one and get married there (possibly NY.. not Maryland because they ask for SS# here as well..at least in our County).

But, like I said. You still have time to spare.. I guess they would be the only ones with answers as to why they have a hold.

Come and get married in VA. Specifically you can do it in Alexandria, No SSN required, and no county residency :)

After marriage it took as about month and a half to get a SSN.

Where did you get the info saying you need a SSN to get a marriage license? You may want to view this site for city specific and the secondary ID they accept. A passport and birth certificate should be acceptable.

Or pick another city in PA .

Thanks for the advice, links, etc. I guess I can go city by city checking for the ones that don’t require a SS#. So far, I check on 5 and all of them ask for it… saying ”Social Security numbers will be requested”… now, one says “Applicants must provide a social security number (federal and state mandates for U.S. citizens)” which makes me think that a SSN is not required for the non US citizen… I’ll make a couple of phone calls and maybe, as some of you said, other forms of ID is enough…

Again, thanks…

Yeah! Give the courthouses a call and ask; as you said, maybe it's requested from USCs only.

We too got married in VA good.gif, even though we live in MD.

Frederick County in Maryland doesn't require a SSN. I didn't have one.

My county website said SSN, so I called to ask what a foreign person would do. She told me passport was adequate for him. She said if someone has a SSN, then they must provide it. If they don't have one then photo id is enough. Maybe the PA website is being too generic and not listing all the exceptions.

Our experience with the local SS office and immigration was malicious, stupid employees doing their best to harm us and relishing their power.

When a brand new Russian immigrant employee started working there we finally got her social security number, after already receiving the green card because she had some compassion for immigrants instead of contempt for them.

Thanks for the extra responses... here's an update...

We went today and the SS# required is the one from the US citizen. Proper ID for the fiancé/fiancée is all that is required for the non US citizen… in our case she used her passport and Venezuelan ID…

I agree, the information is too generic… so a call or a visit to the court building is needed… we went for the later and took care of the license altogether…

Done… in three days from now, we can get married…

Thanks gals/guys...
