Not a question about removal of conditions. Moving to traveling during immigration as the OP asked about traveling without a passport and only a green card.

It does not matter where you were married. Your consulate office is Chicago. They will be the office to take your application for new passport.

yes it matters to them.My husband spoke to them 2 days before we supposed to go to chicago. The lady he talked to over the phone told him clearly to send and application to washington dc first for the registration of our marriage. Also they said that if I'll apply a renew a passport I have to go there personally.THanks!

Florida is not under the jurisdiction of chicago it needs to be done in W. DC

While I agree with everyone, I also think it depends on BP's (Border Patrol) mood sometimes. When we entered Canada, I was asked for both my passport and GC. When we travelled to Mexico, I was only asked for the last one. So I volunteered to present my passport and even still, the BP was like... "No, I don't needt it" while checkin' out my (expired) GC's info in the system.

THANKS!

According to the Chicago consulate web site, they will only accept marriage certificates from States in their Jurisdiction. Link here: Report of marriage rules chicago consulate (scroll to the bottom). Of course, what they do in real life may be different, but thats not what it says.

Only Marriage Certificates from the following states are accepted by the Consulate:

Arkansas Mississippi

Illinois Missouri

Indiana Nebraska

Iowa North Dakota

Kansas Ohio

Louisiana Oklahoma

Michigan South Dakota

Minnesota Wisconsin

Yes. We had checked this link before. Which is Florida is outside their jurisdiction. thanks!

It is settled then. You will be staying in the US until you obtain US citizenship and can apply for a US passport. If you desire to travel before then, you will need to jump through all the hoops to renew your PI passport. Do not forget about the N-400 processing time too.

Good luck,

Dave

Yes. It'll take a lot of time to get everything done in order for my to get my passport here. I am not sure we may just drive to washington to get a new PI passport.

Here is what the Philippines Embassy/Consulate says about where to report your marriage:

"The marriage of a Filipino should be reported to and registered with the Philippine National Statistics Office through the Embassy/Consulate General having jurisdiction over the locality where the event took place."

My link.

thanks!

Hello everyone, I have a quick question. My husband and I were planning to go to Canada, but my passport has been expired a month ago. Do I need to have a passport to cross the boarder or greencard is fine?

You can apply for a "Travel Document" if it's too difficult to get a passport. It looks like a passport and is issued by USCIS, although it is not a passport. Some countries will allow you to travel on it in lieu of a passport, but you'd just have to ask the Canadian authorities if it's adequate with a Green Card.

The application is I-131 (the same application to apply for advance parole).

they will need both...i've been canada when i'm just green card holder...they check my passport and green card esp. if you entering back in the US.

The longer it takes to happen the more you'll appreciate it when it does!

Actually, now that I think about it. When we went to Washington DC to register our marriage and get the passport in her married name, the first question the lady asked was "where did you get married?". She wasn't interested in where we lived.

It was pretty simple though. The marriage registration was done on the spot, and she had her married name passport in about a week and a half.

thanks Dave. We've been calling W.DC,but unfortunately we don't get any answer.Yes I guess we are just have to go there sometime next month.

I would not risk it if it was me. I traveled to Canada a couple of times too and they are moody and not consistent. I err to the side of safety to avoid complications.

Are you suggesting I took a risk? I did not take a risk. I'm not advising anyone take a risk. I clearly stated I agreed, OP should bring her passport and GC.

I go in and out Canada as we live close to border here in Lynden WA. I managed to cross first time going and returning just showing my passport. On our second time though after presenting my passport me and hubby were ask to wait in the lounge then I saw few officers started talking seem had serious trouble coming up with a decision, then after almost 30 minutes one of them sitting on the window while looking seriously in front of her PC asked me to come forward and said..she thinks I need a Canadian visa because according to USCIS website blah blah..then I dropped my green card in front of her and she goes THAT's WHAT I NEED!! you don't need a passport. SInce then I would use my green card and never had problem however, I would hear from people including my hubby says it depends to the border patrol. My sister-in law's husband is a border patrol and he said you just need to present your GC but he is just one of the many look outs. Enjoy your trip don't end up with a mess

You legally don't need a passport to go between the US and Canada, be it by land, sea or air. When you fly, though, they often ask for a passport, and you know how airline employees are (inconsistently trained), so you might have to ask for a supervisor, etc. If you drive, you do not need a passport. I have gone back and forth several times, and I only had a GC. That's all I gave them.

We went there during Thanksgiving, since it was on the way from Georgia to my mom's home in Maryland. Be prepared for a long day. My wife wanted to get the marriage registered, do something about voter registration, and get new passports for herself and our step daughter. We arrived about 10AM and finished about 4:30PM. Of course a lot of that was because there are about 100 filipino women doing the same thing and once the conversation starts, business is secondary.

As long as you cross the border in the car, you can only use GC it is still acceptable. However if you are flying your are required to have passport.

I agree with the above ... I'm Canadian and was waiting for my passport renewal to come in and I called the border and they told me that I could enter and exit Canada with just my Green Card as long as your driving and not flying and that people do it all the time. So I did and all was fine. I wasn't even asked for my passport.
