How to Change Stepson's Family Name after in USA

I and my wife share the same family name. My stepson does not feel good using his current family name. So, my question is, after my stepson in usa, how can we change his family name to his mothers (also mine)? I understand we may not be able to change his family name in Green Card and his passport, and would be happy if his family name can be changed and he can use his new family name in school and in SSN without troubles in ROC and obtaining his citizenship processes. Any advice? Has anyone did this?

It's called adoption, or a legal name change request thru the local court system. Check with the local court system in your area.
