How often do we have to see each other?

Im a USC my wife and her children are in the process of immigrating to USA. The process is taking awhile (took time to get the money to pay for application fees and normal processing time) so my question is this: my wife has an approved I-485 and Im waiting to submit her visa application until the children are "caught up" so everyone can immigrate together. It has already been a year and a half since we last saw each other. I heard once that if we are apart too long then the marriage is no longer valid for immigration? We are only apart because we need the money for immigration and for them to fly to USA when the time comes. Does anyone know anything about this?
