Hi friends,

Well I am not surprised by your reaction. I have seen many negative thought makers on VJ especially in last 5 months during my wife's immigration process.

IMO, when you read a post on a forum don't try to completely get into someone's response until you have fully understood that person's situation and see if it matches with yours.

Going back to your original topic about job search, please elaborate your qualification and visa status to have others help you on where to search and give some advice.

Stay positive because there are lot of pessimistic ppl out there in this world who may try to make you believe life is full of struggle.

My wife had a job 1 month after getting her EAD. It was a factory job, working through a microscope and totally out of her field, but she was happy to be working. Three weeks afterwards she got a job in an office. Its still not doing what she wants to be doing here, but it's a bit closer and she's getting experience working in the USA. Her plan is to start looking for a better job after she has 6 months work experience here. She's been at that work for about two months now. She constantly exceeds expectations and her training periods on new tasks always get cut short because she catches on so fast. Her opinion is the work is all pretty simple.

My wife worked very hard to get a job. She literally had herself working pretty much full time to find something.

My husband has been working his new job for almost exactly one month now (arrived in Feb, took a couple months to get all his working documents nailed down). He loves it, he is working apt maintenance doing things he has already done and learning new stuff. He was desperate for a job, we looked high and low, mostly at doing things that he didn't want to do. We are blessed he found a good company.

I wrote up his resume and sent it out, but he did everything from there (without speaking English very well!). Also we just found out his starting pay rate (what he requested) is a bit higher than others!

I had my EAD in hand near the end of February and I was working by the middle of March. I updated my resume, went on a few interviews, and signed on with a really excellent staffing agency. They ended up finding me the job I currently have that fits my experience, and I've been here for a little over three months now. It's temporary, but a temp-to-hire situation. The company has the option to hire me at the end of my term here, and I have every reason to believe that they will.

I came here in November 2010 and started to look for a job towards the end of December of the same year. About a month later, I received an employment offer. I had to back out due to personal reasons and spent the entire year (2011) working from home as a freelance writer. It's tough to find jobs as a writer but it was helping pay the bills. The tricky part is paying your own taxes.

Towards the end of 2011 I started looking for a full-time job again. I was a little discouraged given that I still didn't have any "formal" work experience in the U.S. After dozens of online applications, in March 2012 I received a phone call from a small company (to which I applied via Craigslist like the first job offer) and was hired right the day after the interview. Starting salary was a bit lower than expected, but last week - after only 3 months - they have given me a raise due to my hard work and commitment. I'm in Chicago and things are tough but nothing is impossible. I have a bachelor's degree in Marketing and even though I'm not working directly in Marketing, I'm very happy with my job and with my employer.

Don't give up!

I had EAD approved Feb. 15th, was called to an interview the day after. Got the job and have had it since February. Got a raise last week, and assigned a new task so I get to use my dslr camera in there for the webpage. Freedom through responsibility, here I come

Edit: Congrats to all the others in this thread - I know it's a challenge to start over with maybe less pay than what you're used to and a different work enviroment.

I arrived in California in August 2011. I redid my resume and took my sweet time doing this knowing how important it is. Started looking for a job in September 2011. I went for 3 interviews and was offered a job after the 3rd towards the end of the month and started in October. Good firm, moderate pay, excellent benefits. After 9 months experience there, I started looking for another job and landed one after the first interview. Fantastic pay(25% increase), better prospects and other good stuff. Hope to be in this new place for a long time. Thats my story!

Just sharing my experience, hope to inspire some VJ'ers that losing hope in finding job in their field this recession.

Got here June 2009 and allowed to work September 2009, I applied on several jobs but was very unlucky but taking things slowly as I wanted to adapt so well first here in US. I started to learn how to drive by December 2009. Then, financial problems started to creep on us by the start of 2010 and I am feeling anxious of getting job to help for finances. I am getting sad as I wanted to help my husband, so he got me a dog by February 2010, so it will cheer me up and helped me to interact with more people. I got a part-time job March 2010 which I primarily took to help me with my credit score. It didn't help much for our finances but it cheer me up as I talking to more people. When got my driver's license by May 2010, I aggressively looked for a job in my field. I got a couple of interviews but didn't get job. Not getting the job didn't discourage me, instead it gave me more hope that companies considering my qualifications and gave me interviews. Though, of course there was disappointments, I never stopped to send resumes and updated myself for the industry I am trying to get a job. After months and applying to closer state as well, I got job offer in my field by September 2010 but started October. We moved in different state where I got the job.

Aside from determination and perseverance on looking for job, I kept holding on my faith that God is helping me to find job that would be best for me, so whenever I didn't get the job, I told myself that the job wasn't for me though it seemed perfect for me, God have great plan for me, I shouldn't lost hope and I should keep looking.

So, that's my story.

Great idea for a thread!

I got my EAD back in January. I made things a bit more complicated for myself, as my husband and I had a second larger wedding (and honeymoon as I could then travel) in March, so trying to get jobs before the middle of March was not good!

However, when we got back from honeymoon, I spent most of my time posting my resume, looking for jobs and talking to employment agencies. I had a couple of interviews by the end of March and was offered a job at the beginning of April. As I work in healthcare, I was able to pick up a similar job to the one I was doing in the UK (and the pay is a lot better too, which is a bonus). I've been working at that job for a month or so now (as I had a long lead time before I could start), and it's GREAT to be working again. Now I'm not 'flat-bound' anymore, and am finally able to contribute to the money that comes in, things are SO much easier and the time I spent waiting around for AOS to be approved and all that other stuff has faded. Now, I look back and think 'wow - we've achieved a lot in the last year' and it feels like life can get back to normal again! I hope those currently in the middle of the process (which can be motivation-sapping at times) are able to move through it quickly and get out the other side!
