We plan on having my nieces visit for 3-4 weeks in August. Can someone remind me what my brother and his ex need to provide so the border crossing is smooth coming into the US (land - at Buffalo)? They are divorced but on excellent terms so we don't anticipate there being a problem with both parents signing letters of permission or anything.

What should be in the letters (1 with both signing or 2 separate?) and do they need to be notarized? I expect to be pulled over at the border but hey, maybe with a little luck and preparation perhaps we won't :D

PS - they are 12 and 13 1/2

Hi,

My grandaughter crossed with me when I entered the USA on my K1 visa. I had a note signed by both my daughter and son-in-law, not noterized. Her note was short, to the point, stated the duration of her visit, and my daughter's contact #. Also I had her passport, birth certificate, and medical card. We had no problems, this was at the Pigeon River Border crossing. I am happy to say she will be visiting again this August!

On another crossing, while I still lived in Canada, I brought two grandchildren over for a weekend visit. One granddaughter is under the sole custody of my daughter, so her not was only signed by the custodial parent, we showed passports and notes and had no trouble crossing. In fact, we had more questions trying to reenter Canada!

Good luck & enjoy your visit!

That's excellent, thanks! Precisely what I am looking for. I will have their passports and I hadn't thought of their birth certs & health cards, but that shouldn't be a problem either.

Here's a DFAIT sample letter: http://www.voyage.gc.ca/preparation_information/consent-letter_lettre-consentement-eng

It's been my experience as well that Canada tends to be way pickier.

Enjoy your vacation!
