Hi everyone,

visajourney has been very helpful for me when we filed our papers and i thought we would go through fine and that reading through would be enough.

but now, i am in a bind. i just recently got an email telling me that they have mailed me our interview notice and the scheduled date is JULY 24, 2012. The issue now is i really have to re-schedule this date. I am actually studying to take the Bar exam and the bar exam dates are July 24-26, 2012. Any other dates would have been fine except for these 3. But sadly, somehow, i got this one. :(

I would like to ask for your help, especially for those who had experience in changing interview dates. Is the bar exam a compelling enough reason to change the interview date? How do i change the interview date? Has anyone been successful in changing their interview dates? Again, I really appreciate any help. Thanks! :)

You don't have to have a "good enough" reason, you can change it for any reason but generally it is not advised to change it. You mail the interview date letter back requesting change of interview date or contact USCIS requesting change of interview date and follow their instructions.

Thank you Inky. Is it better to mail them the interview letter back or to schedule an infopass? I've read of horror stories where the IO never receives the request to change the interview date and then denies the AOS for failure to show up on the day itself.

I would ask myself which is more important, the bar or completing this step of the immigration process? You can re-schedule the interview, but it may be several months from the initial date which may cause you problems with the ability to work should the EAD expire before the interview. What happens if you decide to sit for a different bar date? I would weigh this decision on how it affects your life afterwards and reschedule the one that has less impact--if it were me I think I would reschedule the bar as USCIS is so unpredictable about what they will do and when you will get another interview date. As you state in your response above, you could open up a whole can of worms should they claim they never received the reschedule request.

Choose wisely.

Good luck,

Dave

Given that the Bar exam is only held twice a year (in February and July) it's probably a better idea to reschedule the interview rather than reschedule the Bar.

Thanks for your advice Dave. I really appreciate it. Surprisingly though, I have not even gotten my EAD card. No notice as to when it will be ordered in production. The interview date came first.

If i sit for a different bar date, I would have to pay again the bar exam fees plus another review course. Cost wise, it is more cost efficient for me to re-schedule the interview (because it doesnt cost anything, just time).

I am more leaning towards re-scheduling the interview and preparing a back up just in case. My husband and I were thinking that in the event we would not get a re-scheduled interview by the time the original interview date arrives, he would go to the interview and explain to the IO why I am not there and that we sent a request to change it. (this is just in case the IO will not get the re-schedule request). I read this in a post somewhere that someone showed up without the wife and the IO granted a 30 days re-schedule. I am praying I will be as lucky as that guy. :)

Given that the Bar exam is only held twice a year (in February and July) it's probably a better idea to reschedule the interview rather than reschedule the Bar.

Yes, this was what we decided to do eventually. Although, I am still a bit apprehensive with this decision. Adding this to the already stressful bar review is just more stress. haha

Good luck and hoping all goes smoothly with the reschedule. Given the costs and everything inolved, I think you are going about this the right way.

Again good luck,

Dave

Thanks, Dave! :)

As an update as well, I received a letter from the local USCIS approving my reschedule for interview. They move pretty fast. YEY! :) They sent out the letter the day after I faxed my letter and their letter is dated the same day I faxed my letter. Letter says I should expect a new interview notice within 30-60 days. whew!

We just rescheduled as well, but due to change of address. Calling the Customer Service line seems like the best way.

Reschedules seem to move fast, which is great.

My only worry was those horror stories about the IO from the first scheduled interview not getting the memo about reschedule, which is a problem because when the couple doesn't show up for the first interview the case is automatically denied.... So to prevent that we wrote a certified mail letter to the Office we were scheduled to appear first requesting they confirm that they know NOT to expect us to show up for the interview because we moved ...

You will probably be fine because your rescheduled interview is at the same office, though!

Yeah, ive heard of those too. Our backup for that is my husband will show up on the day of the original schedule IF we dont get a new schedule before that day, just in case. I am the one who really can't go. Hopefully though, we get a new schedule as soon as possible, or at least before our original scheduled date.

OHHHH what a great idea!!! We already got the new interview schedule BUT I like taking the safest route. Our plan C was to go to the original interview which is 1,1000miles away IF WE DON'T HEAR from them before July 13th (fingers crossed) ... NEW plan C thanks to your idea is only ONE of us to go! Save 50% of the cost...

Maybe a trip to Mall of America would not be TERRIBLE :)
