Do we need a certified translation for Birth Certificate

Here's the thing, i know there have been other posts about this, but I'd like a clarification on my specific issue. Sorry. Just a stickler.

We have my Japanese fiance's koseki (birth certificate) with a translation she had done in Japan. Its correct, but there's no note or certification of the document by a translator.

I also have a PHOTOCOPY of a certified translated koseki from a company I used when we were doing the K-1 Visa set up.

I swear I had more copies here at the house, but I can't find them. I may not have gotten another duplicate. I think I sent all my real copies to the lawyer or the Embassy.

Do we need to have a certified & stamped translation of her koseki for the AOS process? Or will what we currently have be sufficient?

I have done all my translation and with no problem .(including BC)

It needs to be certified, but if you're competent in both languages, you can just add a page where you certified all that by yourself. Take the same words giving by USCIS on Old_Dog_Barking's link.. Quick and easy!

Hmm... I would say an original signature on the certification page is safer.

Ok! Thanks again everyone. My now wife and I will go the personal certification route.

Since we already have copies of a translation and she is fluent in both languages, she will just add the extra page certifying it is correct! Awesome.

Just for your information, the Consulate of Japan should be able to translate it for you. For example, I live in Seattle and I just went to the Consulate with my passport (and visa in it) and my original family register. I dropped them off in the morning and the translated birth certificate was ready the next morning for pick-up. It was $15 total. This is much cheaper than getting it translated in Japan by a certified translator.

I actually did get one translated by a certified translator when filing for my K1 visa and copied the translation myself onto a Word document. I guess I could have sent this one in when adjusting for status but I didn't want to take the risk.
