From: Yahoo

Egypt's high court ordered the entire Egyptian parliament dissolved on Thursday, saying the January elections held there were unconstitutional.

The constitutional court in Cairo declared that one-third of the lower house of parliament was elected unconstitutionally, according to the Washington Post.

"The makeup of the entire chamber is illegal and, consequently, it does not legally stand," the court said.

The high court also ruled that Ahmed Shafiq, an ally and former prime minister to ousted president Hosni Mubarak, can run for president against Mohamed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood candidate.

The rulings—both of which favor Mubarak supporters—were met with an immediate outcry from protesters, who clashed with police outside the courthouse.

Egypt's historic presidential election—the first since Mubarak's ouster—begins Saturday.

"Both decisions empower the Mubarak status quo," Omar Ashour, director of Middle East studies at Exeter University, told the Post, "which is no surprise, as the judges of the court were appointed by the latter, and represent a part of the so-called 'deep-state.'"

Islamists secured a majority of seats in the lower house of parliament in the Jan. 7 elections.

Mubarak stepped down in February 2011 following more than two weeks of anti-government demonstrations—part of the so-called Arab spring.

UPDATE

The Constitution Court explained its decision: both the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament are unconstitutional, although any legislation isn't, unless the legislation is challenged and found to be unconstitutional.

My husband is pretty shocked about the disparity between how the US media is covering Egypt and the way it has pretty much ignored Tunisia. My husband has to spend a lot more time finding stories on with the French media and other sources to know ####### is going on in his country. He is happy that his country has helped spawn a change in Arab regimes but skeptical as to how these changes will play out. THere is a curfew called in Tunisia over fears of violence at the moment.

My hubby was pretty upset when i called him this morning. I hadn't known what happened and still didn't quite get what he was talking about until i read about it later on. He was very angered by what had happened and said that Egypt is done for now and ruined... he's feeling a little better now but seems down and defeated...lol... i told him that everything happening is out of his hands and that he just had to make the best of it... its also hard for me to get emotional about something that I'm not really being faced with. I didn't wanna say that its a good thing he's traveling cuz that seemed insensitive, but i was totally thinking it... =\

This is a good site for Tunisian news, post revolution. It's pretty honest and gives different view points. It's in English but I think French and Arabic as well.

I agree Tunisia has been mostly ignored although I was surprised a few weeks ago to see an Anderson Cooper round table discussion panel that did actually credit the revolutions to Tunisia. I think Tunisia is largely ignored due to the relative limited amount of violence and bloodshed in comparison to Egypt, Libya, and Syria.

About two days ago things seemed to get rough when an art show in Tunis showcased pieces that included the word Allah written in insects. The Salafists got worked up and insanity ruled again. Two young men lost their lives. Curfews have been lifted or pulled back though in most places.

Thanks so much for posting this. Anis watches that nightly and we skype often with his family. It's just disheartening when people think that the Arab Spring started in Egypt (not to say that Egypt did not play a significant role).

Hi PalmTreGurl, in a nut shell my husband thought it was the right thing to do since the law states that 50% are to

be elected from the recognized parties and the other 50% from people with no party affiliation. The Muslim Brothers

ran on both sides which is why they were the majority. With this law they can only have 50% no more. So it was unlawful

what they did. Hope I didn't mess this up but there you go.
