Hello, folks!

I started filling the AOS forms and I have a doubt... Have any of you sent the documents like Birth and Divorce certificates translated by a common translator (not sworn)?

I have my divorce papers translated by a sworn translator, and I would like to start the AOS process this week still and I didn't know I would have to translate my birth certificate, since the marriage and divorce certificates substitute that...

Thanks! (F)

Hi, there is NO need to pay extra for the sworn translation. All USCIS requires is that someone fluent in both languages signs it for you, claiming that the document has been correctly translated to the best of their knowledge. I translated my own birth certificate from Portuguese to English, and had a friend of mine, who's fluent in both languages, sign it at the bottom (I typed this and all she had to do was sign it). This is pretty much what mine looked like:

I, _____________________________________________, (Name of Translator)

hereby certify that:

1. I am suitably proficient in both English and _____________________________ to translate; and

2. I have translated the attached document from ___________________________ and hereby certify that the same is an accurate and complete translation to the best of my knowledge, ability and belief.

______________________________________

(Signature of Translator)

_________________________________________________________

(Street Address)

_________________________________________________________

(City, State, Zip)

_________________________________________________________

(Telephone Number)

Hope that helps! Wish the best to you!

P.S. Priscila, I just noticed you are from Brazil! second coincidence, since I am from Brazil too, and my husband's name is Christopher, like yours, hehe. Well, why don't you join us at this following thread: "Brasileiritchas". I also noticed you're getting married in two days! Congratulations!

My story:

09/23/2002 - Met Chris online, there was something very special about this guy =0)

07/16/2006 - We got married in Reno, Nevada.

USCIS:

08/13/2006 - Filed for AOS, AP, EAD - they were VERY carefully packaged with a detailed cover sheet on top of each of the forms, just as VJ's instructions recommend. It was A LOT of work, but it did pay off! (we firmly believe this is what sped up our process big time)

08/31/2006 - Biometrics appointment

09/09/2006 - Received my AOS appointment date!

10/26/2006 - EAD touched and AP APPROVED!

10/27/2006 - AOS appointment at 7:30 AM! APPROVED IN EXACTLY 70 DAYS!!!

11/01/2006 - EAD approved

11/02/2006 - Email notification - greencard will be mailed as soon as it is ready! YAY again!

11/02/2006 - Welcome to the United States of America letter in the mail! Almost there! =)

11/06/2006 - EAD card and White card (a.k.a. greencard) arrive in the mail!

Journey Total Duration: 80 days

Filed for removal of conditions on 07-28-2008 and had them removed on 09-10-2008

I did it by myself from spanish to english for birth certificates, at the end I wrote:

I, (NAME), hereby certify that the above is an accurate translation of the document, and that I am competent to translate from Spanish (Languaje) to English and visaversa.

You don't have to pay if you know both languages.
