Since I haven't been around much, I'm guessing this post might be one on ignore?

Anyway, it always makes me laugh when someone has to use ignore. This is a message board in cyberspace. If one can't manage differences of opinion and other 'strifes' in this medium, I shudder to think how fooked up one's real life is!

(Note, that wasn't aimed at you Caroline, just springboarding off ya! ;) )

So without even knowing me and not really knowing the entire situation (as you admitted by not being around much) that I must not beable to deal with differing opinions in cyberspace and therefore my real life is "fooked" up as you so eloquently put it.

Is that about right?

Paul

Yes, quite the sweeping statement to make about everyone who utilizes the ignore feature.

And since my usual M.O. is to NOT make sweeping statements...why are you assuming that's what happened here?

I fully recognize that there can be valid reasons for using ignore (trolls as one example). My comment was essentially that I don't see those reasons being the ones that typically cause the ignore feature to be used...instead it's more often than not someone who can dish it out but can't take it.

I didn't say that was the case with this OP; as I just posted, I don't know him.

Again, you don't need to agree or even like what I've posted here. It's my opinion, it makes me laugh that people take this stuff so seriously. *shrug*

I don't think I'm taking it seriously. Honestly, I have to add more smilies to my posts...

I just don't understand how you make the argument that it wasn't directed at the OP, it was directed at anyone who uses ignore. You said, "Anyway, it always makes me laugh when someone has to use ignore". I think it's like saying, "I think anyone who wears red shirts is a big geek." And then when someone takes offense, saying, "Oh, I didn't mean YOU, I meant everyone else who wears red shirts." I find it rather passive agressive. If you don't mean everybody, then you should say exactly who you ARE talking about...

JMHO, as with all other posts, ignore or ridicule as you see fit. ;)

It's a fair statement to say you don't understand. I can appreciate that and I will do my best to clarify.

I assumed (bad me! :P) that since the OP didn't reply to Caroline's post, that it was one of the ones on ignore. I acknowledged the need for an assumption as I haven't been around as much as I used to, and that would then invite anyone to clarify my error if there was one.

"Anyway" was intended as a transitional word to change from a specific comment to a more general one, and I acknowledge that that may not have been clear. It -does- make me laugh when someone who has just been in a mud-slinging match with half the board starts putting people on ignore (again, not intended to be aimed at the OP...I don't know what's gone on with him). Nine times out of ten that's what happens here, at least in my experience. Should I start naming everyone that I see this with? Sure. If I could remember all the instances and names. And then we have the contingent that, if I were to start naming names, would get their knickers in a twist about me 'calling out' other members when I *should* have just used PMs.

How you interpret what I said is obviously from your perspective, just as how I intended is my perspective. I intended to make a general comment based on my experience here. I am usually incredulous at the people who can get all wound up about things total strangers say in cyberspace, especially when they, as I said before, dish it out but then get to a point where ignore is the only way to rein it in. It does make me boggle at how much time and energy gets used on this type of thing, especially since, IMHO, a lot of it could be relieved if people just kept things in perspective. When I see what people write, how upset they get over trivialities (of course, that's subjective), then I do wonder how they manage when faced with more difficult things that impact 'real' life.

I realize I may be in the minority on all this; so be it. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

And, yes, please use smileys, dammit. :P

edit: I am also pretty careful about directly quoting the people to whom I'm talking, specifically so that there are fewer misunderstandings at where I'm directing my comments. You say that it seemed I was speaking directly to the OP (and apparently he thought so too!), when to me, replying to Caroline directly and then telling her that it wasn't directed at her (but was more general) was clearly indicating it wasn't directed at the OP. Again, I acknowledge that it may not have seemed that way to everyone.

Thanks for the explanation.

I think what I can say with certainty is that you can never please everyone!

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
