Hi Everyone,

I am from Australia and plan to marry my US citizen fiancee next spring. We are currently in the US but are returning tio Australia in a few months. We plan to be in Australia for about 6 months and then return to the US on a K1 before our wedding.

We are about to apply for the K1 here in the US but I am starting to get a little nervous about whether our K1 will be ready in time for us to return to the states next spring for the wedding.

Does anyone know how long the K1 process usually takes at the Sydney consulate? Do you think we will have our K1 in hand by the time we need to come back to the States for the wedding?

Would DCF by the best option for me or would I be better to file it in the US (we would be able to this 2 months earlier than if we were to do it in Sydney)

We are looking into booking venues for the wedding etc and I am getting worried that I may not be able to come back to the US in time for the wedding and our wedding plans will be all mixed up.

Any information or help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

Thanks so much for your time.

David

Don't ever put down money that is nonrefundable based on how long you expect the process to take. The process can be taking 3 months when you start and for no apparent reason suddenly change to 8. You particular case can get messed up and suddenly take a year. Average timelines are just that, average. And the K-1 filing process can vary more than the 90 day window you get to get married.

6 months seems awfully optimistic. It is not the length of time at the Embassy n Australia, but how long it could take stateside to get approval what drives the length. Initial approval is from USCIS, and it's running at least 4-5 months; then it goes to NVC for 1-3 weeks, and only then gets to the Embassy in Sidney; where it depends on their load.

I would not book anything until I have visa in hand; that is the normal advice given here. You can't tell what can happen with your specific case.

Not sure whether DCF is available in Sudney; but you can check in the Australia forum for someone with experience in that.
