What I quoted above is civilian employment only. If you add military into this, the picture gets even clearer. Total federal personnel was just over 5MM in 1975 (6.25% of the total US workforce) after peaking at over 6.5MM in 1968 (which was almost 10% of the total US workforce then). In 2010, total federal personnel was 4.4MM or 3.4% of the total US workforce - down some 40% over three decades and down some 65% from peak times in the late 60's. There's just no substance supporting the statement Mr. Ignoramus made there.
