I think I'll lose weight the 11 days that I'm there!!!!

Doubtful, but possible - I don't know abt Egypt, but in Morocco they have the *best* bread!!! And you eat bread w/ *everything*. Also, I would carry w/ me chewable Pepcid AC - just in case - it came in handy on many occasions, even for Said ;) . The only thing that really bothered me were some of the cheeses, but not all - and one nite, a case of the runs after my first bowl of harira! I was scared to have it again after that, but I did and it was fine. I love the food there, but I'm generally pretty tolerant of most foods. If you like sodas on ice, don't count on it - they will be chilled but no ice. I usually had bottled water or tea/coffee.

All 3 times I have been there I have lost weight. Anywhere from 5 to 11 lbs! Funny thing is that I ate anything and everything I wanted. Why can't that happen here???

You have had some good advice here, listen well! I got sick all 3 times as well, and I thought I was being careful. The last visit was pretty bad. High fever, body aches, diarrhea, blah! I did eat the fruit though...my downfall.

I was surprised that I not only got a bladder infection twice, but a yeast infection each and ever visit! Okay, you think I would learn and prepare better.

BTW, my gyny told me that all of these things are pretty common when you travel, our systems get all out of whack. My husband must think I am diseased!

Too weird about the mosquitos - I never ever saw one in Marrakech. Flies yes, some other bugs yes but really I thought the bugs were minor. (I did grow up in Upper Michigan in the woods, surrounded by bugs of all shapes, sizes and annoyances so maybe I am acclimated?)

I highly reccomend the bottled water strategy. I drank either boiled liquids (like hot tea), bottled water, or pre-packaged drinks (like soda). I avoided ice and raw foods from the market (like cheese and fruit). Not a single case of "involuntary protein spill" or "Pharoh's Revenge" :)

Call me crazy but now I have some Beatles song in my head that won't go away and it has the word Marrakech in it I think. I think it says "she's taking me to marrakech". Is that right?

Crosby Stills and Nash - Marrakech Express

Looking at the world through the sunset in your eyes

Traveling the train through clear Moroccan skies

Ducks and pigs and chickens call

Animal carpet wall to wall

American ladies five-foot tall in blue

Sweeping cobwebs from the edges of my mind

Had to get away to see what we could find

Hope the days that lie ahead

Bring us back to where they've led

Listen not to what's been said to you

Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakech Express

Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakech Express

They're taking me to Marrakesh

All aboard the train, all aboard the train

I've been saving all my money just to take you there

I smell the garden in your hair

Take the train from Casablanca going south

Blowing smoke rings from the corners of my mouth

Colored cottons hang in the air

Charming cobras in the square

Striped djellebas we can wear at home Well, let me hear you now

Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakech Express

Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakech Express

They're taking me to Marrakesh

Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakech Express

Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakech Express

They're taking me to Marrakesh

All on board the train, all on board the train

All on board

When I met my husband I had the same feeling...something about Marrakech. My daughter of all people knew the song. Marrakech express by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Both times I was in Cairo I ate whatever my husband ate. Never got sick. I had fresh fruit that he bought, but I washed and peeled it. Ate the eggs we bought at the market, but they were cooked very well by myself. Had coffee and tea with water from the tap. But I only drank bottled water for fresh drinking water. We traveled the first time I was there to Belbeis (I think that is how you spell) about 2 hours out of Cairo to his family's. Ate all the food there and drank only soda there. I didn't get any vaccines before going either. What vaccines are you getting? Anyway, I left US healthy and came home healthy. No problems.

The first time I was in Egypt there was one day I basically lived in the bathroom! It was my second day there and I wanted to die!!!! I think it was a combination of all the foods, water, etc. After that day though I was fine and continued to eat like an Egyptian! One problem I did have after the bathroom incident was that I was sooo constipated I thought I was gonna blow up!

The second time I went a friend told me to take acidophillis. It keeps all the normal bacteria in the digestive tract. I took it and had no problems at all. :D
