I am an U.S citizen and I am engaged to an Nigerian. We have planned to get this summer in Nigeria, however, my fiancé mentioned to me that I would need a single certificate or affidavit to get married. I have no idea where I can get this document from, and he does not know either. I have tried to google and see how I can get this document, but the information I found was wither confusing or not useful at all. Has anybody had to get a single certificate to get married in Nigeria before??

Thanks, :D

Were you previously married? I was married in Nigeria (Lagos) in December. I needed to passport photo and passport and my divorce decree... that is all I needed. I am not sure what he means by a single certificate or affidavit. I know my husband had to swear that he had never been married before he did an affidavit there so maybe it would be something like that if you were never married just a notorized statement that you have never been married. Check with the clerk of courts maybe they will know if there is an affidavit to verify you have never been married,. I dont know that is just my suggestion...

Thanks for the reply..no I have never been married. When you say clerk of courts are you talking about in Nigeria? I thought about emailing them and finding out what I need, but I wanted to ask around first before I do. Thanks,

I went to the clerk of courts in Broward County Florida and they did a marriage record search for me and provided a document which said that there were no marriage records for me. That worked for me in Colombia.

No I was talking for your local clerk of courts they could do a search and see if you were married and supply what you would need. Enjoy your time in Nigeria wish I were going but I have to wait a few more months I am going sometime around September.
