Selling/trading in an imported Canadian Car

Hello,

I've imported my 03 Nissan Sentra to the USA, but it looks like I'll have to get some work done to it in the next year or so. Nothing super big, but enough that I'm considering trading it in. We recently did this with my wife's car for a Toyota Prius, and we love the car (we traded a USA car, as she is American).

My question is: Do I have to wait a certain amount of time before I can sell/trade-in my car? I did not intend on trading it in when I moved, but circumstances are leading us to consider trading it in. I feel like there was some kind of "wait a year or two" rule, but I can no longer find that information online. Could someone please help?

I don't believe so, it's your car, you have the title for it correct? You can do with it as you please (within the law of course).

Nissan USA keeps sending me letters saying that they want to buy my car...

12/31/2009 - Marriage

07/21/2010 - AOS approved

08/04/2010 - Green Card received (and it's actually green!)

05/30/2012 - Sent ROC packet to VSC

06/08/2012 - Received NOA1 for ROC (Dated 06/04/2012)

You have to wait one year after import, if you sell it before then, you will have to pay all the applicable duty taxes at a US port of entry before it can be sold or traded in.

I think you're right sheeshkabelle, but do you know where I can find that information online to confirm?

I'm sure where, but it's somewhere online. I'm looking at the paper that was given to us when my husband picked up his passport last week explaining how to import his stuff.

"Automobiles

Noresidents/first-time immigrants may import a vehicle duty-free for personal use if the vehicle is imported with the owner's arrival. Vehicles do not need to accompany the owners, but should arrive in the US at approximately the same time, at least within a few weeks. If a delay of more than a few weeks should occur the importer must prove that the delay was justified. Vehicles that don't conform to US safety and emission standards must be exported with in one year and my not be sold in the US. There is no exemption or extension of the export requirement. Conforming vehicles imported under the duty-free exemption are dutiable if sold with in one year of importation. Duty must be paid that most conveniently located customs office before the sale is completed."
