Billions of dollars in new Wall Street taxes proposed to pay for national dental insurance plan

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Thursday proposed a new tax on Wall Street trading that would raise more than $250 billion over 10 years in order to pay for a new plan to have the federal government offer dental health insurance coverage to millions of Americans.

The two members proposed legislation that would impose a "financial transactions" tax on equity trades that would collect $2.50 for every $10,000 traded, which would cover stock and bond trades. That language would reportedly raise an estimated $288 billion over 10 years, enough to cover the expected $25 billion per year cost of the new dental plan.

Under their bill, comprehensive dental coverage would be given to all Medicare, Medicaid and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries. It would also increase funding across various federal agencies to increase oral health services at health centers, add funds for dental care at schools and provide grant money for people to receive dental care in clinics rather than emergency rooms.

Oh, how I weep at the grave injustice of this! A tax rate of 0.00025% is sheer robbery, robbery I tell you!

Actually, the sheer robbery will come when the firms figure out a way to bundle this back into the soft dollars investors pay to the investment banks, but this time you can bet your sweet bippy it won't be as low as an effective rate of 0.00025%.

I mean seriously, what legit gov't run healthcare system does not provide for dental? And mental health and preventive care such as immunizations and gym membership?

I don't have dental insurance. It doesn't make sense when you're self employed. I pay for dental services out of pocket. It's not THAT expensive, certainly cheaper than dental insurance.

Why not just add dentists to medical insurance, like they did psychiatric services? Teeth are more important to your health than recovering repressed childhood memories.
