I just did my biometrics. I am still waiting for my new green card. I need to travel outside of the US to Canada, and come back into the US. I see that some people got a stamp in their passport, and others didn't after the biometrics. Did you? How did you do this? is it just a year extension stamp?

Make an Infopass appointment at your local USCIS office to get the stamp. As rocks said, your NOA1 extends the GC validity for a year.

Does anyone think it is necessary to get a stamp if I am doing out of country travel?

No. It's the same as the 1 year extension the NOA1 gives you. Take the original copy of your NOA1. If you have changed your name on your GC but not on your passport then remember to take your marriage certificate with you.
