Hello,

I am french (studyuing in france) and I am going to follow a tree weeks summer school for phd students in an american university.

Do you think I need a visa for such a short period or my passeport is enough?

Thanks for your answers.

Hi laztec,

I would advise that you contact the university where you are going and ask them if you need a visa. 3 weeks is short but if you are studying, it is different than being a tourist and you may need a visa.

Good luck on your journey

You should contact your school. I doubt you need a visa though since you're French and France participates in the Visa Waiver Program. I know many Japanese coming to US to attend ESL without a visa, but you must contact the university or the program you're on to make sure.

You'll definitely need a visa to study in the US, even if you're staying less than 90 days. You cannot attend school on the VWP. Generally, you'll need to be a full-time student to qualify.

I'm not sure if the visa would be F-1 or J-1.

Thanks for your answers.

I have been told by the organisers of the school that I need a bussiness visa. Which makes sense because I am an emplmoye of my univertsity (as a PHD student) and I am going to follow three weeks of conferrecnces in an US university but will not be registered as a student of this university.

Thanks again.

Best

That would actually be the VWP.
