Ok, so I want to get a jump on some packing.

I have to pack for myself and the girls and also my mother. So imagine my lack of desire to do any of it!!

Here is my thought....pack a box and number it. In a notepad have each box # listed and a brief description of the contents. i.e knick knacks, dolls, toys, pictures etc.

Will that be suitable or do I need to label each box with what is in it? Or is there some other method that works better?

Suggestions please.

Thanks,

Karen

I made a detailed list, made it in MS word (table format) I didnt list every single item, I grouped many together, but still had like 5-7 pages!! Made headings such as; item, Serial # (electronics) When purchased. I didn't get that carried away. On the boxes themselves I made it somewhat general, Kitchen, bathroom and listed some of the contents on the box. I didnt go overboard. Customs dude at Maine said it was a better job then he would ever do for himself, lol I coul dhave shortned my 5-7 pages to even shorter, but didnt want it too look too short, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We used professional movers for the move, but I packed everything myself. I put a general description on the outside of the box - ie books, linens, winter clothes, summer clothes (for my information more than customs!), kitchen utensils, dishes, etc. I did put the serial numbers and component numbers of things like the computer or electronics on the outside of the box as well in case customs wanted to do any follow up, but we had absolutely no trouble with the border crossing. The moving company completed a list with each box numbered and using my description so they could check off the arrival of everything that was shipped. I think you will be fine using the method you suggest.

Phew! Thank you! I have put brief descriptions on the outer of each box so far. Again, more for my info when I get to the other end. I have only packed about five boxes so far and it is all the girls stuff. Mainly collectables etc. So I will be sure to give more detail when I can both on the box and on my list.

Glad that you guys pointed out the serial#s I wasn't even thinking of that for the computer, tv's etc

Thanks!

I only labeled each box or tote by room...kitchen..bedroom...dining room etc.

The moving company told me to write household goods on the forms. Everything got here no problem.

For the movers, I labeled the delicate stuff like my china as fragile and boxes with books in them as heavy...hoping they'd take good care of my stuff.

Yeah, I did the fragile and heavy cautions as well - had a lot of heavy boxes of books! We were very pleased - everything arrived perfectly and not a single thing was broken, scratched or disturbed:-).

if your things are crossing without you, you'll also need to do a customs form 3299 I think it is. Check the Customs and Border Patrol website. The moving company will need that, as well as a copy of your visa and I-94 before they can take it across the border.

When I packed my stuff, I got a bunch of those plastic sticky envelope things (like couriers use...i got them at G&T or Staples er summat) and stuck them to the boxes with a list of contents for each box, and just hand wrote the lists. I made 2 copies, one for me, and one for the moving company, and the handwritten copy was stuck to the box.

Wow! It would seem I am probably just fine doing what I am. I assumed that U-Pack would have the forms I needed for customs. I will have to look into the necessary forms.

Heck I still need to interview. Just thought getting ahead of the game would be beneficial for my sanity later.

my moving co. emailed me all the forms, then he called and we filled them out together. I then left them with a friend who met and gave them to the driver. After I crossed, I faxed a copy of the stamped Visa (CR1) to them and they gave that to the driver. All my stuff arrived a week or so later.
