They have businesses? How? I thought they were illegals. Last I checked, you couldn't open a business in Israel without a teudat zehut (national ID card).

Again, from the article I quoted:

Last month, demonstrations against African refugees in Tel Aviv turned violent. Protesters looted shops, broke windows and firebombed buildings, including a nursery. Days ago, arsonists torched the home of 10 African migrants in Jerusalem, injuring four, and leaving the unequivocal graffiti: "Get out of the neighbourhood."

The "shops" and "nursery" would be businesses. And you can do lots of stuff in Israel without an ID or permit.

But we're they businesses owned by immigrants, as you asserted earlier, or just businesses that happened to be where these protests took place?

Because if they were just any old businesses, then it's really little different from when OWS or G8 protestors have a hissy fit here in the USA. Idiots don't have to be Israeli to do really dumb stuff.

The daycare business was run out of a home, and it was firebombed.

The attack in the early hours of Monday morning follows a series of firebombings in southern Tel Aviv – an area in which African migrants are concentrated – including apartments and a kindergarten. Shops run by or serving migrants were smashed up and looted in a violent demonstration last month, in which Africans were attacked.

Not their businesses. Probably random businesses caught in the crossfire.

BS. You can't even go to a mall without an ID or permit.

You can't legitimately run a business in Israel if you don't have ID. You can't open a bank account without it, you can't pay taxes without it. It's as simple as that.

If you keep claiming otherwise, you're the one in denial.

Who says you have to open a bank account or pay taxes to run a business ? I never made the claim they were "legitimately" running businesses. These migrants are illegal; everything they do to work or earn money to feed themselves is illegal. News flash: their legal status is not stopping them from working or running businesses. It seems you have very little actual experience in Israel; there are LOTS of illegals working under the table and operating under-the-table businesses there, including West Bank and Gaza Palestinians.

Re: "me" supposedly "claiming" this - Ma Wilson, I am quoting credible, multiple sources. This was reported in every major Israeli newspaper and television newscast. Come up with something from a credible source that says otherwise...

Here's another article full of disturbing stuff you don't want to face:

Levinsky park migrants live in fear after Tel Aviv race riots

After anti-migrant demonstration turns violent, display of naked racism in 'liberal city' also shocks many Israelis

Since an anti-migrant demonstration last week turned ugly and violent, these men – many of whom fled in fear from their homes in sub-Saharan Africa – are fearful once again. The display of naked racism in what is routinely described as a diverse and liberal city also shocked many Israelis.

Around 1,000 people marched through an area of south Tel Aviv in which migrants are concentrated, chanting "blacks out" and holding signs calling for expulsion. Shops serving the migrant community were smashed up and looted; dark-skinned men were threatened. A member of the Israeli parliament told the crowd: "The Sudanese are a cancer in our body."

...

Just a few days earlier the prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, had warned that a flood of "illegal infiltrators" was threatening Israel's identity.

In recent weeks, Molotov cocktails have been thrown at apartments housing African migrants. One firebomb was hurled into the yard of a kindergarten.

"I've never seen anything like it before," says Oscar Olivier, 45, who fled from Kinshasa 18 years ago. "It was a surprise, but in some ways it was also foreseeable. Some politicians have been orchestrating this, inciting violence and hatred, for months."

He was now very frightened, not just for himself but also his nine-year-old daughter, who was born in Israel but has no legal rights.

A straw poll in and around Levinsky park finds men from Sudan, Eritrea, Congo, Nigeria and Somalia, most of whom describe escaping "bad places" in search of a better, safer life. Generally they pay Bedouin tribesmen to smuggle them across the Israel-Egypt border. Some bring their families, but male migrants easily outnumber women.

...

Once on Israeli territory, migrants are detained while their identity and country of origin is checked. Most are then given "conditional release" and put on buses to Tel Aviv, where they are dropped in Levinsky park and left to fend for themselves, or other Israeli towns and cities.

Their temporary permits to stay in Israel need to be renewed every three or four months, and specifically exclude permission to work. Many end up being employed on a casual basis for a pittance, living in overcrowded rundown apartments, confined to the fringes of society.

Some turn to crime out of desperation. "Yes, a few people have committed crimes, but not because they are foreigners but because they are hungry and not allowed to work," says Olivier. "You don't blame the whole community because of a few crimes."

...

Last week, the US state department noted in a global report on human rights that in 2011, Israel had approved just one asylum application out of 4,603 made during the course of the year.

And in the coming week, the state is seeking court approval to deport at least 700 migrants to south Sudan, despite concern about their safety.

...

Many in Levinsky park simply feel they have swapped one kind of oppression for another. "They don't like black people in Israel," said Aldheer Ahmed, 45, from Darfur. Nasser Omeh, 24, also from Darfur, says reaching Israel was a positive moment in a bleak life. "But now they just want us to go away."

After leaving Congo, Olivier went first to Egypt, where he realised he had "left one dictatorship for another". He decided to head for Israel, "the only democracy in the region".

"I expected to be welcomed by people who understand what it is to be a fugitive. Now each day I am waiting for the violence and hatred to flare up again," he said.

Isn't that all the more reason for the israeli authorities to extend them a more humane treatment and empathize with their plight? Giving them money and sending them back to the hell from which they came will not help. No ammount of money should not be enough to buy them a clean conscience in sending these people back to what is possibly their deaths.

I know it feels good to say this kinda stuff but tell me, is there a limit to the number of illegals they should accept?

And if so, what should they do with those who arrive when that number is reached?

Why is Israel the only Western country which can unashamedly - preserve it's ethnic or religious character?

Even more hypocritical when you consider Israel didn't give a hoot about what happened after it expelled hundreds of thousands of Sunni Palestinians into Lebanon (a country with a population just half the size of Israel's,) drastically changing the ethnic and religious balance of that country which has caused decades of problems.... or when Israel was expelling hundreds of thousands of Palestinians into Jordan, completely shifting its ethnic balance so that it was no longer a primarily Bedouin country.

But hey - 60 thousand Africans threatens to overwhelm Israel with non-Jewish foreign blackness.

Mas Ahnasa ;)

If you don't pay taxes, don't expect the police to protect your business from looters.

I never made the claim they were "legitimately" running businesses.

We're getting somewhere. You have admitted these were illegal businesses.

And if so, what should they do with those who arrive when that number is reached?

Of course there should be a reasonable policy when it comes to handling asylum cases. But according to the Guardian article, Israel granted just one asylum case last year, out of 4,603 applicants.

Israel didn't really have much of a policy to deal with the migrants... what it has been doing until now is - stop them at the border, check their country of origin, and then grant nearly all of them a temporary permit which allows them to remain in Israel, but explicitly denies them the right to work.

Then they are put on a bus to Tel Aviv or other points inside Israel, and left to fend for themselves. Many of them remain homeless and have been camped out at a public park.

rlw2z7.jpg

Some Israeli charity groups and social activists set up soup kitchens, etc. for them, but the government did little to nothing to prepare any sort of facility to house them until recently. Currently though, it is building a giant detention center (the largest in the world) which will hold up to 11,000 people.

So... police should allow people who are not paying taxes to be robbed, or allow places at which illegals work to be robbed. I must say this is truly a civilized idea and a light unto the world.

We're getting somewhere. You have admitted these were illegal businesses.

Um... you're the one who claimed I said "legitimate." So it's you who needs to admit that. Or is it your new strawman

Hatikva btw is Hebrew for "the hope" (for the return to Zion) - it's also the name of Israel's national anthem.

So what comes after Kristallnacht ? Night of long knives, I believe...
