Hey,

Just wondering what why some of us have opted for England rather then UK or vise versa for their beneficiary's country of origin?

This discrepancy doesn't show up on Igor's list or the time line searches as they don't seem to include England (or do they add it without separating it?)...

I know it's off topic, but I'm just curious (and a little statistic obsessed)... LOL

The UK isn't a country it is a collection of countries. So to say you come from the UK is a bit like saying you come from the EU if you live in France. Not quite the same but I think it gives the gist of why I prefer to say I come from England rather than the UK.

What to expect at the POE - WIKI entry

Good question. I would've normally put England and always refer to my guy being from England, but I picked United Kingdom to match the name of this forum and what shows on Igor's List and all the data.

I'm being bit #######-retentive, I know.

Igor's list isn't country based so doesn't matter. Timeline search is by embassy and not by the country you picked so it gets all the countries who interview in London. The difference shows up if you click Portals. You will see only the people who chose the same as you....what they have posted, who lives near you, who has an interview and who was recently approved.

I've cut back the posts I look at to just those who will be interviewing in London because I don't keep up with the whole world like I do London K1 issues. Yes there's things that are common to everybody, but I tend to only help Brits lately. So to find their posts I click portals to get the UK. Then I click "View other portals" and find the England flag, click to see what those choosing England are asking. Repeat with Scotland and Wales. I still haven't figured out Ireland and not many from Isle of Man.

We've discussed it twice at length here to lump it all together and Capt Ewok was approached but he never responded his thoughts of how/if he could configure the database so anybody clicking "Portals" would find all the members lumped together. People seem to have their national pride and the Scots want to be Scotland for example. I was England for several years. After the last thread discussing this topic, I switched to UK and copied the VJ England flag to use in my signature. I still wish I didn't have to look at four separate portals to find the people I try to help, but it's not a huge inconvenience. It would be nice to see who from England, Scotland, and Wales lives near me, new members, and who has passed an interview but that's mostly a curiosity and not a big deal. "View other portals" doesn't pick up those items.

I did the English flag because according to my born and bred Englishman, he is English. I made the mistake of calling him British once - just once. :P I've learned a thing or two about English pride.

UK, England, same difference if its England youre talking about as far as im concerned :)

And this is why many Scots avoid using the Union Jack.

Anyway, I put UK on all my USCIS forms. But when I had biometrics in Vermont they asked for 'country of citizenship' and the lady told me that UK or GB wasn't an option. She said it was the country you predominately lived in, so I got to say I was a Scottish citizen.

Your passport says 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.

LOL... I wonder how many USC would know this?

I teach in a high school and I explain the distinction of UK, GB, Scotland, England, Wales and NI to my US students. They are usually very interested.

I wonder how many people back home actually know this......

Because he's from Northern Ireland.

And the other flags are too controversial.

I meant that because im English. I cant comment for people from Scotland or Wales or NI or anything. But even if i was, id still probably put the UK because im not really bothered about that kind of stuff. To each their own really! I dont think theres a rule on it that people are following.

My husband is always Scottish first but also takes pride in being British as well. You would be surprised how many Americans consider the UK to mean only England and do not seem to recall the other 3 countries at all. So I use the Scottish flag because that is where he was born and raised.

Because he's from Northern Ireland.

And the other flags are too controversial.

I don;t think any of the flags are controversial. It's kinda cool to see all of them.
