There are provisions for the beneficiary to qualify. Read the I-864 instructions to learn more. Also, the I-864 FAQ link in my signature below may be helpful.

You need to have 3 times that amount. And it would need to be in a US account. Also you would need to show that you've had that amount of money for a long (1 year or more) amount of time.

The I-864 is used.

You can use your assets. It is the Dept of State, not USCIS, that publishes the asset guidelines.

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3183.html#6

What can be used as assets?

Assets easily convertible to cash can be savings, stocks, bonds and property.

Can the immigrant visa applicant count assets that he or she owns that are outside the United States, such as real estate or personal property?

Yes, under the following conditions:

The assets must be convertible to cash within 12 months

The applicant must show that the assets can be removed from the country where they are located. Many countries have limits on cash or liquid assets that can removed from the country

The net value of assets is at least five times the difference between the sponsor's income and 125 percent of the poverty guideline for the household size.

If it is just for you and your wife your account needs to have $94,560 which is 5X the 125% poverty level

If you give the money to your wife and she puts it in her own US bank account then her account only requires $56,736 which is 3X the 100% poverty level.

Best of luck!

Don't pay anyone a fee who sounds this way.

Do lots of reading here on VJ to get a sense of how things go. Especially those members going through the same embassy/consulate.

I could claim to be able to get you a visa and charge you a fee. If it doesn't work out, my life is the same. You (and your spouse) suffer, not me. Please be cautious. This process is hard enough, especially for people coming from Iran.

You will not get a visa if you/ your wife cannot fulfill the affidavit of support. You can "self sponsor", but need way more than you have. Get your wife to cast the net wider looking for a co-sponsor- ask at church or mosque, old college friends, co-workers, second cousins in different states....

Don't trust "randon guy who may have a law degree"

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

Corrected small mistake above

Have you considered a third country, where it would be easier and safer for both of you to live?
