Well after months and months of waiting I finally got my email saying my oath is scheduled. Now that has me thinking about passports.

What does every one else do? Do you use both passports or just the US passports.

Our Canadian Passport will be expiring in Aug. Also the younger 2 will be USC once I get mine, the older two will have to wait 2 more years for theirs, so no matter what I need to get their passports renewed. I just don't know if I want to get 3 Canadian and 3 US passports. It gets a bit expensive. At lest the baby can use just her birth certificate for now.

Ok lets here your reasons please and thank you

coming into the USA as a USA citizen--you MUST use ur USA passport--its that simple!! And NO your Naturalization certifiate does not work, lol THey said that a dozen times at my ceremony!

Going to Canada, you can use ur USA passport as well, you don't need a Cdn passport. On the USA passport it says ur country of birth, so they will know ur a Canuck!!

Yep in ur case it would get $$$$ pretty quick

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I use both and will continue to depending on where I'm leaving from. When we went to France a few months back i used my US passport because I was leaving from the US and returning to the US and booked tickets using the US passport.

Driving into Canada I use my Cdn passport and then driving back into the US I use my US one. I plan to maintain both always and will do so for my daughter for now.

Thanks Flames, I knew all that I guess I'm trying to justify spending all that extra $$$ when it really isn't needed.

I have no plans to go anywhere other then Canada in the near future, and since I can't do a simplified renewal (need to change married name) it will take just as long if I really need one later.

Udella I would loved to keep my Canadian passport I just don't know if it is worth it. That is why I posted this to help make up my mind.

They keep saying Canada is going to be switching to a 10 yr Passport....no clue if there is any truth in that. I still have both. But if I had a large family....and only plans was to travel to Canada, I'd prob just stick with the USA passport.

I plan to just use a US passport if I ever become a citizen since a. the passport lasts 10 years and b. it's cheaper.

Other than for sentimental reasons, I can't really think of any benefits to having a Canadian passport. Would there be a benefit I'm not thinking of?

Removing Conditions

Sent package to VSC - 8/12/11

NOA1 - 8/16/11

Biometrics - 9/14/11

You mean like flying to Cuba or not being targeted by terrorist organizations? :hehe:

Americans can go to Cuba now! They recently opened it up for tour groups, I know someone who went. So there's another reason I don't need it!

Thanks for all the feedback, I think we will just stick to US passports it will be so much easier and cheaper. I don't plan on going to any other country other then Canada, I still haven't been all over the US and would like to visit places here when I'm not heading back to see family.

So once my Oath ceremony is done (still waiting for the letter) I will just get a US passport X3

Last time I read about the 10 yr passports they were saying 2014 was when it would start.
