Okay, so my fiance finally got to get the police check done when there weren't any people in custody. But now he's worried about the options that were selected on the fingerprint machine.

"There were a bunch of options about why the prints were being taken, and the police officer didn't know which one to choose. She picked "other" but I'm pretty sure it just covered "other crimes" because it was asking for information like "Offender Name". And at the bottom there was a drop down list that again was asking a reason, and listed things like "Animal Cruelty". You could pick "Other" again there, but it had a box for the reason, and the box had limited characters, so she could only fit in "criminal history" instead of "criminal history check" or something like that. But now I don't want my prints sitting on the computer, listed under some sort of offence. =/"

Does anyone remember what options you picked at the fingerprint machine so that he doesn't continue worrying about this? He says there were options for things that didn't involve crimes, but there was no option that specifically said "Criminal Record Check" so the officer just kept pressing "Other".

I had mine done at the police headquarters in Melbourne. The operator keyed in the details form me but did stumble at the question "why do you need fingerprints done". I told her it was for an immigration visa which was one of the options on the form. That's all she needed and my certificate came back ok and approved by NVC. If you are worried can you call them and tell them the situation? That you came in for a criminal history check for an immigration visa for the USA but seem to be fingerprinted for something else?

Hope it all works out for you.

They DO NOT retain fingerprints unless he has been convicted of a crime and there's a whole system for that. The prints are submitted for a background check, that is it. Then they are removed from the system.

Here's a link: http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/fullhtml/inforce/act+133+1998+FIRST+0+N (see #12) I don't know if that makes him feel any better but I honestly would not worry about it.

Thank you for the link and information. He was just worried the officer chose the wrong options and it recorded him as getting prints done for some kind of offense, because she didn't seem to know what she was doing in regards to this process. I'm sure he's just over-worrying. If they don't keep the prints, all should be well.

Definitely over-worrying (sorry about the late reply - you didn't quote me so I didn't get notified of your reply. You can delete the quote box but I'd still get notified). I have no idea what they put for me. my police check is clear. So even if his prints WERE retained in the system for a crime there's no arrest record, court record or anything like that so if it became an issue it's easy proven that it was an error. I highly doubt that they're keeping them but even if they did, it's not convicting him of a crime. That's just not how it works.

Oh, I had no idea the quote system could tell people that I replied to them! I had often wondered why people would post multiple times in a row with different quotes to different people when it all could have fit in one. ^^; I'll definitely keep that in mind now. Thanks! (By the way, is there some kind of option I need to mark to get notified of replies? I've never been informed of replies to people quoting my posts.) EDIT: Never mind, I found it!

Anyway, he's feeling a bit better about this now. He definitely tends to over-worry about situations where records might be kept. I'm sure your latest post will put him at ease. =)
