 I arrived on a k1 3 weeks ago and got married on Friday. I'm now ready to apply for my social security number but my husband thinks I should have done this before we got married. Is he right? Have I messed up? How do I fix it? Or can I just apply in my married name?

Help!

You haven't done anything wrong. It is advised not to apply for you SSN till at least two weeks after you arrive. I applied for my SSN after I got married and just needed to bring my passport (with I-94 and visa) and marriage certificate with me. Some people have issues with getting their married name on their card due to lack of knowledge on the SS officers behalf, but you are allowed to do this as long as your I-94 is still valid...I think it has to have 3 weeks left on it but not sure.

visa, I-94, passport and marriage certificate once you receive it.

Go and apply....

comment above is correct. I applied for my SSN after I got married so I didn't have to make multiple trips to the SS office just for a name change. just make sure your I-94 is still valid when you do this, bring your marriage certificate for the name change (or whatever applies in your state), and fill in the application with your married name. in my case, I also put in my maiden name in the alias section.

Yep, I applied after marriage as well. :) Didn't feel like having to change my name on the card at a later date. I showed up with my passport, other ID, and my marriage certificate. Had no problems!

with a k 1 visa you cannot file ahead of time for SS number

That's not true. The K-1 beneficiary can apply for the SSN a couple of weeks after they arrive in the US. They don't have to wait until they're married to get it, though many females may opt to wait to avoid multiple trips if they're planning to change their name. As long as the I-94 hasn't expired, it's fine to get it as soon as the SSA has the info in their system.

Dont get to upset if they dont issue you your SSN.

I married pretty much right away too, and went for my SSN after. I was denied because the K1 and my married name were now different last names. I had to wait for the marriage license to catch up with the immigration papers. Now in all fairness, I had all the documents that verifide that I was the same person named on the K1 and when I posted on here what had happened, I was told by the members here that the officer I saw was incorrect in not giving me the SSN that day. That may be or may not be, end result was I had to wait a month before I could Reapply. So even though people here give you their opinions, it really comes down to the office you go to and their proceedures. However, dont fret, you are entitled to the SSN and eventually all the paperwork will work out.

I do not know what you meant by 'file ahead of time', but someone who enters with a K-1 is certainly eligible to apply for their SNN. They are usually advised to wait at least 10 days after entry to make sure their name is in the database. http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Since we are here to be helpful and trying to give people the most accurate answers, I will paraphrase something important I was told before: If you are not confident you understand the question and know the correct answer, it is best for you not to answer and let others that are confident of the answer respond to the question instead. It will avoid confusion and misinformation being given out.

This is a great post.
