Hi all. I'm sure that this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find it. How are people financing their higher education. My husband asked me last night about if he would be able to get a loan for school. I told him I didn't know. Does anyone know if and when an immigrant is elligable for Federal loans, work/study, and pell grants? Any info, or knowledge about how to get the info would be appreciated. Thanks, Mandolin

Once your husband has adjusted status, he is eligible for federal student loans because they are not considered means-tested benefits (probably because he will have to pay them back). Work-study could even be possible before he completely adjusts as long as he has an EAD. For more information, I would get in touch with the financial aid office at the school into which your husband plans to enroll because they have the best access to information. You can also take a look at the FAFSA-website; they have an FAQ that might offer some answers to your questions.

Pell grants are more complicated because they depend on the houshold income, and the income has to be quite low in order to obtain the grant. Pell grants are not very high at the moment and in most case are not even enough to finance the tuition at many state schools. However, when your husband submits his application for financial aid, he can aks to be considered for a Pell grant as well since these are also being distributed through the Financial aid office.

I don't know at what level your husband plans to enter a university or college, but if he plans to attend graduate school, he can also apply for graduate assistantships which usually cover part if not all of the tuition and offer a small stipend in addition that depending on the school could be enough to get through school without additional loans.

Tell your husband to contact the Financial Aid office of the schools he's interested in. For the FAFSA you usually have to possess conditiional permanent residency in order to qualify, visa's don't cut it.

It also depends on the course of study you want to undertake.

Just wanted to add that some places of employment will pay tuition. My husband's will pay 70 percent once he has been there one year. Since we do not want to be liable for the "non resident" tuition fees, this one year wait is ok. As far as student loans go, I think he just has to be a LPR.
