Counting Household Size for I-864

I am confused by the instructions for calculating household size on the I-864.

I am sponsoring my wife, so she is the principal (and only immigrant). Therefore, for line 21(a), I have written "1" for the number of persons I am sponsoring. The problem is that line 21© requires me to write "1" again if I am currently married.

If I follow the instructions as written, I will have to count my wife twice, which will give us a household size of 4, despite the fact that there are only 3 of us (including our baby).

What am I supposed to do?

the form did say "do not count anybody twice" so you just put 1 for the principal immigrant and 0 for 21©. done and easy! Although counting the household size was the most confusing part of all for me too.....!

Are you following these instructions?

I found that part confusing as well because I automatically assumed this only for your spouse - but this form isn't just for spouses, it's for a multitude of situations - then I followed the instructions in the link above.

I filled in only 21a.

For me the 2 headings are the deciding factors:

"Persons you ARE sponsoring in this affidavit:"

"Persons NOT sponsored in this affidavit:"

HTH :)

Bingo. It's critical to carefully study EVERY instruction.

Huh??? Dahhh?? Was the question answered here?? I am stillll confused. Let me just ask for my situation. I have ONE wife, One step son, who is on a separate petition !! So he shouldn't even be mentioned in this total???

They each have their separate 130 petitions....what do I put where?? Haaaaa. Yes, some simple things Are made too complicated! Thanks.

Yes, your stepson will be counted on your wife's I-864 and your wife will be counted on your stepson's I-864. On the wife's count the stepson in 21d as a dependent child. Don't count him twice on his own I-864 and don't forget to count your wife on HIS affidavit. Just DON'T count anybody twice on the SAME affidavit.
