Hello. I just wanted to ask something to clear up some confusion. I've read some good advice about getting the Police Clearance certificate from the Passport Office. But since my husband doesn't have a passport office in his city, the nearest passport office (the one in which his passport was issued) is 7 hours away. He will have to take the day off of his work, and he is having a big problem doing that (and as such won't be able to go for several weeks as taking time off is causing him problems). So is he eligible to apply for the PSK online (and thus not have to travel anywhere)??

Also, since his passport is more than 6 months old, my understanding is that he has to first get something from his local police to present to his passport office. Does anyone know if this is the case? If so, what should the police write (is there a form)? And how would it work to get the PCC from PSK online, if he has to get a copy of the local police documentation? I've asked about the PCC before in my threads, but haven't gotten a complete answer, so I wanted to clarify these things. Thanks for any input!

As per my knowledge, it is not possible to apply online for PCC. but you can download the form from ministry of external affairs website. Why dont you ask your husband to find some good agent around his place. I applied for PCC through an agent and he charged me Rs. 1200. I just had to submit him my orignal passport and proof of residence. I did not have to submit PCC from any local police police station to passport office. But right after that i applied for police clearance at commissioner office and then after few days they sent the file to local police station in my area for verification. it all took around 1 month.

You can upload the application online through PSK, but you'll eventually have to fix up an appointment and go in person with the supporting documents. As for the local police office, I'm not sure of this, as when I got my PCC, I'd just gotten my passport re-issued a coupla months prior.

From what you have described, it seems your husband lives in a small town. In India different PSK from one state to another state has their own set of rules to trouble Indian citizens. Since your husband has to travel 7 hrs to reach PSK office, my 1st advice is to ask your husband to find a local immigration agent and/or local police officer who knows about USA immigration procedure. If he can find an agent/police officer, then ask him/her about what is the easiest procedure other immigrants from your husband's town have followed to obtain PCC in the recent time.

This is exactly what I would do if I was in the same situation. I rather talk to local immigration agent / police officer to save my time and energy. Don't rely on words from ppl on VJ about their personal experience unless they are living in the same city/town and state in India.

Basically PCC from PSK office does require a physical attendance at local PSK to obtain PCC. You may schedule an appointment online for their office, but you can't just ship the form and expect them to mail you PCC.

NOTE: NVC does not care whether PCC is issued by PSK office or your local police station. BUT Mumbai consulate definitely ask PCC from PSK office at the time of your interview.

We got PCC from local passport office (ours is Madurai) last year and it just took one day. Submitted PCC application forms in the morning and collected it in the afternoon. We were given two original copies of PCC. This happened in June 2011. We need to get a new one now.

We are no longer need to go to local passport office. You can login in to PSK website and complete forms online or upload completed application form and make an appointment. Take a copy of completed form and other required docs to local PSK office on the day of appointment and apply for PCC. One would still need to visit PSK on the day of appointment to get PCC in person.

We were never needed or asked for a police certificate from a local police station. But I heard some PSK's insists and its weird. Check with your local PSK at -http://www.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/locatePSK/locatePFCInp

Good luck

Yes, my husband is from a smaller city. I'm not sure if there is any immigration agent from his city... at least not that he knows of, but I will tell him to ask around.

As far as your point above, my husband would be thrilled if he could get the certificate from the police station and not have to travel 7 hours to the passport office. I assume we are going through the Delhi consulate as my husband's city is way up north in the state of Uttar Pradesh. If we could only get the local police certicate it would be great, but I am afraid to take a chance unless people have gone through the process at NVC and Delhi consulate with only a local police clearance (and NOT one from the passport office). I'd really like to find out more about this is anyone has experiences.

Yes, your husband will be scheduled at Delhi consulate for an interview.

Here's my suggestion:

1st create a new thread in this same section to see if someone from Delhi consulate has a most recent experience, and you may get a response. (PS: Be clear in your question in subject line for a new thread)

2nd check on Delhi consulate website and find out PCC requirement listed in Packet 4.

3rd check Delhi consulate interview experiences on VJ and see if someone has already posted some information in there about PCC requirement at Delhi consulate. Otherwise simply try to send PM to those folks who had interviews recently in last 3 months and ask if Delhi consulate will accept PCC from local police station in any circumstances. I am sure someone will answer to your question :)

I have seen few ppl on VJ saying they got PCC from local passport office without asking any letter from NVC/Consulate. My wife was strictly denied to issue PCC from local PSK in Ahmedabad without NVC/Consulate letter asking for PCC from PSK office. IMHO don't rely on any one's advice on VJ about PCC except the person is living in the same city/state and has most recent experience. You have plenty of time so don't panic and do take your time to research and you will be fine
