On our return flight to the U.S., my wife looked for her 2 year green card at the ticket counter and she did not find it. After looking through all her things, she still could not find it. It must have gotten lost on the way to Mexico. They allowed us to take the first part of our flight to Mexico City. Then we had to file a police report for the lost green card. Once we had this, we went to the U.S. embassy to obtain a letter to allow her to fly and enter into the United States. In the process, we lost our connecting flight and I had to pay $600 for new tickets on my credit card. The problem is that I had to apply for her 10 year card in December 2012. Her 2 year card expired in March 2013. I am trying to avoid having to pay $490 for the I-90, since I have to pay for the I-751 in December. I have a copy of the front of her green card, but not the back. Should I make an InfoPass appointment? Is there a way to avoid paying the $490 for the I-90 since I have to apply for the I-751 relatively soon? Has this happened to anyone and what was were experience?

No it seems you will have to pay for the replacement grren card. They are aware you don't have the original because you needed papers from the embassy so you can't fake it. Expensive lesson in travel organization.v

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

If you're not in a border control area and she's not changing jobs, there may not be a need to get a replacement. If she does work in a place that is likely to get raided, or there are random immigrant checks, or she's changing jobs, then you're going to need it. My wife normally does not carry her EAD or AP card. I made her a copy and laminated, so she's more likely to carry that now. Normally her EAD/AP card is stored safely at home. But we don't get checks for illegals in this part of the country. We've needed if for her to get her permit and drivers license, for loan applications, and for getting her on a joint loan on a car.

Arizona is unlawful, You'll definately need it there, the wild west.

But what people are saying above is true. I lost mine many years ago and i waited for the renewal which wasnt far, but i did reported the card lost.

Quess what....it turns out she found the card at home. So, I believe she never took it with her on the trip. That is why she could not find it. But, am I going to have problems filing the I-751 if we already reported it lost at the U.S embassy in Mexico? Should I let someone know that we found it?

That's great news. Might want to write or call the Embassy and let them know it was forgotten at home. I doubt it should create a problem though when you remove conditions.
