Hopefully someone has a good answer. We are in process of I-130 for my step daughter. Her name is spelled on birth certificate as Mariya and of course we used that name on all her application papers, The issue is she had to get new passport to complete the process and they changed spelling of her name to Mariia. Will this cause an issue at NVC??? or at Ukrainian embassy???? Thanks in advance for any knowledge.

i don't know anything about your case, sorry, but just wanted to say something.

when she gets here, people will be calling here "Mariah", take it from me.. for 6 years ive been telling people how to pronounce Masha, now that i use my full name which they spelled incorrectly in my passport "Mariya", it's just as bad.

I went through a similar problem, My wife’s name is Alla and if translated from Russian or Ukrainian that is how it is spelled in English—but she is a citizen of Belarus and the Belarusian government translated it from her Russian birth certificate to Ala, on the English page of her passport. On the 129-F I spelled it as Alla on all the documents. I contacted the embassy via email and explained the situation; they said it did not matter that they would go with the name spelling on her passport. They got here with no problems and there were also spelling issues with her daughters last name. Now on the AOS I wrote a letter explaining the problem and the name should be translated to English from the original birth certificate, not from Russian to Belarusian to English. All her AOS notifications have come with “Alla” we have our interview on July 6th and we will see.

Also if you have time, she might try to go get her passport corrected before her interview.
