We actually came to a bit of this situation during our relationship. It put our visa application on hold for over two years. My husband works for the Feds and his security clearance prevented him from establishing a relationship with anyone other than an American citizenship. He fought and fought for waivers and exclusion, which in the end we did win, however at one point it looked like he was going to have to quit, or get fired. I had to have a heart-to-heart with myself at that point. I never wanted our relationship to get in the way of his career. It was going to mean a loss of pension, a possible move, no reference...it was a horrible situation. At one point I thought it would be best if I ended the relationship. I love Gene so much. When I mentioned to him some of my thoughts, he was heart broken. He had actually told his supervisor, if this didn't get approved, then he was going to leave the agency. He would have given it all up for our relationship. I'm humbled.

Needless to say, this didn't happen, and we're happily married now. He's the love of my life, but our world was in such a topsy-turvy place for awhile I thought this might be the best course of action.

I picked 'other' because I would want to take my partners thoughts and opinions into consideration. If he thought parting ways was NOT the best way forward then I would certainly take that into consideration, not just make the decision for the both of us on my own.
