Hi, I do not think a starter check should be a problem, it should clear when they deposit/cash the check. Not sure what paperwork you are filing, but they directed that the check be made payable to U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the I-130 petition. It further went on to instruct to spell it out and not use initials. What do the instructions say for the paperwork you are filing? Does it say you can make it payable to USCIS using initials?

we were told this by the paralegal that helped us put the I-130 petition and I-485. She said to make the check payable to the USCIS, nothing about initials. what would happen if they dont accept the starter check for either reason?

Your submissions will be returned to you because the checks are not payable to the proper entity. Simply write new checks payable to U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

You may want to read through the form instructions completely and then review the forms since you've already had one mistake that will cost you some extra time.
