so your spouse, the Colombian citizen (I presume) 'forgot' to return...how does that fact add equity to this situation? You appear to be directly involved with the very situtation I described.

colombia has been famous for finding ways to move unaccompanied children to the US to live with other relatives (or their parents who might have been in the US without permission)...do not expect this interview to be some sort of slam dunk approval. If the child's mother does not have a US visa, then neither will the child. Minor children qualify, as it were, through their parents, not through other third parties, no matter how much taxes you have paid, for whom you voted, what college you attended, what sort of house you live in or who in the political world you think you know. :bonk:

How can we get a visa for her mom! She doesn't work at a real job and doesn't have strong ties to colombia

Great this is all I wanna know! The visa part isn't a big deal because I have a lawyer doing all this and I have been to the embassy and asked a million questions and they told me what I needed and had to prove! Also spoke to the Colombian embassy in NYC and DC and they both said its possible for her to get the visa

The Colombian embassies/consuls in the US have zero control over our visa process. And neither does any attorney.

I Am not trying to break the law ad you are basically accusing me! I had no control over my husband when he came or what my in laws did or didn't know! I just want to make the little girls dream come true and thats to see Disney world! They could give me a visa for a week and if be okay with that! I wanted to do 14 days so that we could visit dc and niaggra! Better said famous landmark! But I AM NOT trying to migrate her here :crying:

Please reread my postings...I did not ACCUSE YOU of anything; I merely explained the possible pitfalls associated with your question, and also pointed out that since you are standing right next to someone who essentially did the same, then disbelieving what I posted seems a bit misplaced. Sad fact is this happens all the time, and quite frequently from Colombia. As a result, the VOs are likely to be quite focused on this situation...they are not likely to rubber stamp an approval merely because you want them to do so.

Now, as is quite common on this site, whenever someone does not read some response like..."oh don't worry, everything will turn out peachy keen-o ....and there is an Easter Bunny..." etc...then they get miffed and start making inaccurate accusations against me.

But as of this moment, none of us have anything else to go on except your word...and who really knows what that is worth? Again, just because somebody says or promises something does NOT make it the absolute truth. Even what I say is not ...I merely pointed out the possible downsides, based on my own experience.

Because of all the inherent problems and issues with international child abduction around the world, our VOs are going to be very very cautious when contemplating turning a minor unaccompanied child loose in the US....notice I said cautious....I did not say they would deny said application 101% of the time...but neither did I suggest that they will approve this request instantly. Caution rules the day when it comes to minor children. It has nothing to do with you personally.

It does sound like you are jumping the gun, if she can show she has sole custody she should be good to go.

Why not show her some parts of Columbia she has never had the opportunity to attend. Yes, the USA would be nice, but inlieu of everything place taking her within her own country would be a much sure bet.

I would love to bring my own neices here but with all of the hassle, time spent in places they don't need visas is a better sure bet.

Posted

How can we get a visa for her mom! She doesn't work at a real job and doesn't have strong ties to colombia

First 'we' can NEVER get a visa for anyone. 'We' can apply/petition but 'we' don't have the final word.

Second if the mother/father/legal guardian doesn't have a visa then the under aged applicant has an infinitesimal chance of being approved.

Third if you're not the parent/legal guardian then you won't be allowed at the interview.

If she's so desperate to visit Disney attractions, why not bring her to the one in Hong Kong (Paris/Tokyo) and while you're at it take in The Wall and visit some temples.

Well then, our advice was worth something...as you discovered, there are a lot of variables, many of which most people don't know...getting visas for kids, for friends from certain countries or under certain conditions is far more complex than sending an invitation letter and filling out a couple of forms...because our laws are completely different than most other countries, and we, as Americans, enjoy relative freedom of travel to other countries, and our visa process to the extent it exists in those other countries, is largely a formality combined with a small sum of money.

But thanks to the not inconsiderable abuse by untold thousands of people who have lied, cheated or scammed their way to the US, they leave behind for their fellow countrymen a giant hurdle to overcome when they apply for visas, and find out quickly that their credibility is often cast into deep doubt the moment they step up to the window.

Now before some of you respond by saying...'gosh, that's terrible...those VOs must be mean heartless people!'...well....put yourself in their shoes for a moment...imagine you just arrived in, say, Colombia, and through initial training and a bit of experience, quickly determined that certain stories seemed to be retold...and then, after more investigation, you found out that out of say, 100 similar stories, only about 4 people actually lived up to that story....how 'generous' or how much benefit of the doubt would you be giving? Very darn little. Just like that old saying...'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice,..shame on me!'...VOs do not like their trust to be violated, and thanks to extensive computer data bases, and other electronic tools, the 'memory' of such trust violation lingers on...making even tougher for the next person who 'quisiera a conocer a Sr. Mickey'....
