Petition to bring sister? 23 years? What?

My wife just became a US citizen 2 weeks ago. Right after her swearing in, we asked them at the USCIS what forms we need and how long it will take to bring her sister here. They asked where she was from and I said "philippines" Then he said "oh boy, there is a long wait" When I asked how long, he said that people who applied for visas in 1989 are just now getting their visas. I'm not 100% sure he looked at the right one though. The paper he was looking at was coded "F4" so I'm hoping he misread those codes or something. Does anyone know if petitioning a sibling from philippines is really that long of a wait, and is there another way around it if it is that long a wait?(other than getting married to a US citizen?)

I was just at an immigration attorneys website and it said, depending on what service center, that petitioning a sibling only takes between 5 months to 7 years.

Aug 15, 2006 Sent in updated I-129f

Aug 25, 2006 They cashed my check

Nov 28, 2006 NOA2 approved

Dec 2, 2006 NOA2 recieved in mail

Dec 7, 2006 NVC sends letter saying it will be forwarded to manila in a week

Dec 12, 2006 I receive that letter from NVC

Mar 22, 2007 St. Lukes appointment

Mar 29, 2007 7:30am Interview

Mar 29, 2007 12pm APPROVED!!! PRAISE GOD!!!

April 10, 2007 Fiancee Arrived!!! WOO HOO!!!

July 6, 2007 Sent in AOS (cutting it really close to the 90 days!)

If you assumed 25 years or so it would be as good a guess as any.

Now by them they may well have dispensed with the sibling category anyway.

Siblings of US citizens fall under F4. And the priority date which is current for June is still 22JAN89. You may get through USCIS in just 5 months, but a visa will not be available until your priority date becomes current, which is about 23 years from now.

04/23/12 - NVC received both cases (18 days/12 business days from NOA-2)

05/07/12 - Case numbers and IIN's (14 days/10 business days since NVC received)

05/07/12 - Sent out DS-3032 by email; auto-response received

05/08/12 - AOS fee invoiced, paid - "IN PROCESS"

05/09/12 - AOS fee shows as "PAID"

05/10/12 - Spouse's DS-3032 accepted; minor child's rejected = had petitioner call NVC = received verbal acceptance from operator

05/11/12 - Spouse's IV fee invoiced

05/14/12 - Daughter's IV fee invoiced, paid both IV fees - "IN PROCESS"

05/15/12 - Both IV fees show as "PAID"

05/16/12 - Sent both AOS and both IV packages to NVC via USPS (expected delivery: 05/19/12)

05/21/12 - All 4 packages delivered

05/30/12 - Received checklist for daughter's AOS

05/31/12 - Sent response to checklist via USPS (expected delivery: 06/01/12); Spouse's case completed

F4(siblings of USC) for the Philippines is 22 years wait for visa to migrate to the US. No way around it that route. I figure that's why so many find an American husband where from complete stranger to visa is about 2 years max. What your lady may be able to do is (if sis is a few yrs under 21) petition for a parent then this parent as a LPR petitions for their child (the sister). The wait in total would be 3.5-5 yrs for you in law to reach the US.

The 5 months to 7 yrs the law website gave has to be for the APPROVAL of the I-130 (petition form) your wife would submit.

Does anyone know anything about the j-1 visas? I heard teachers can use them and she has her bachelors in teaching, but I cant seem to find too much about it on this site. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Hi i was under J1 visa before it can only be used if shes still in school or fresh graduate to be an intern.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

Has she considered becoming a nurse? That's a good way for overseas folks to get to the US (if they meet the education requirements), although there is currently a retrogression right now, about a few years. Honestly, however, I think once the economy picks up that they will open the gates wide open again. The nursing shortage is going to become very acute again and sooner than we think...check out allnurses.com

Other countries are about 10 years. Only Mexico, India and the Philipenes are slow. There are only so many allowed per country and those have way more people wanting to use the visas than available visas so the wait in line is a lifetime.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
