I like how lefties always bring up the Triangle fire.

Bring up another one... please.

Lefties? I like how total your lack of understanding of history is. Fascinating actually. No middle ground for slim.

No way. The sun would die! Without these standards we'd all be dead by now!

Luckily we have the government to save us from our own demise!!!!

Actually building codes and inspections in the US are well over 100 years old. Your comment about 100+ year old homes is quite important actually. These structures represent trial and error and codes have been developed from their success.

For instance the Call building survived the 1906 earthquake. As engineers learned about why it survived, elements of its design were codified.

I can appreciate codes and inspections, (especially in commercial and industrial construction) but not the level we have now with residential. There are other ways to deal with residential property owners, the govt doesn't have to be the only and final say in what you build or how you remodel your property.

I just find it senseless when home owners are forced to rip down a tree house, rip out new windows that are 3" too high, pour a concrete driveway or the need to get a permit to build a fence around property.

Because the average DIY'er doesn't have a clue relying on what advice he gets from Home Depot or saw on TV. Tree houses are unsafe by definition. If you increase the height of the window on a bearing wall by 3", you probably tore out that header that was carrying the weight of the roof or second story. The typical homeowner doesn't understand a thing about soil bearing capacity, or wind loads, so usually under builds his fence when he thinks he can design it better than a contractor for half the price with ####### he got from the local retail building supply.

Due to poor building practices? These three come to mind.

Tombstone AZ 1881

San Francisco 1906

Shanghai 2010

Awesome! 130 years the world over and we've found a handful of examples.

That surely justifies big government. Especially when we "learn" from China!

Middle ground is what caused all this. "Well, if we just compromise on this...." That's how we got here.

No compromise. No middle ground. Right or wrong. That's it.

Surely you're not suggesting a private citizen be banned from being stupid on their own property. Are you?

Next you'll be telling us they shouldn't be allowed to buy big drinks because it'll make them fat!

If I can see it, hear it, or smell it from my place.

Soda pop and sugary drinks should just be banned, big or small, along with tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. Modern humans, especially in their formative years, fail to grasp the concept of moderation. The freedom experiment has failed.

Well, failure to pay timely child suport, as an example due to temporary job loss, is a felonious crime in the United States. Then the back fees are then reproted onto your credit report effectively making employers not want to hire you. Then they put a no renewal on your Passport effectively means no chance of getting a job that requires international travel.

These are all things done in the best interest of the child.

China's building standards and permitting process is poor. I'd rather we not learn from China

Then why don't we add 'sex' and 'eating' to your list. Teens and some singles certainly don't engage in moderation where sex is concerned and overweight folks (considering no other factors) don't appear to be grasp the concept of moderation.

Amazing how millions survived playing in tree houses -- minus a permit. I suspect adults can best make decisions about tree houses. I get your point on the fence, however, why are we so opposed to folks being responsible for themselves and their property? If a property owner spends his time building a fence or hires a contractor to do so and it falls over, his loss and his money pissed down the drain.

I am all for forced sterilization and deciding who can and cannot reproduce. We have the technology. It doesn't have to be a crapshoot anymore. Screen everybody before they reach puberty, and if they don't meet the standard, you don't get to breed. Go to jail, collect welfare, fail to support your children, don't finish school in the top ten percent of your class, et cetera, your capacity to reproduce is removed. If folks want to screw like rabbits and sit at home watching Oprah eating potato chips like farm animals, you get the farm treatment, change some folks' minds from screwing to mooing.
