When my son was getting a state ID for Texas the lady said the rule here is to go with the race of the father.

So what does Texas do when the father is mixed race also? If the father was say Native American, and Caucasian, and the mother was Filipino, would that not make the child more Asian than anything else? There was a time they tried to label Americans by which country in Europe they came from. That has faded away just as what race they are will eventually fade.

I for one will be glad when the government stops asking....

Unless it's for medical reasons, none of anybody's business. On the last census, my wife and I didn't check a box for race for either of us. As a matter of fact, on the last census I only answered what was legally required, number of occupants. When they came back to get more information I told them to go away and they did. If forced to answer to some bureaucrat in the future I will say OTHER if that's an option. Can you tell I'm not a fan of government?

Although my wife is Chinese-Spanish-Filipino, I (and she) think predominantly about her Chinese ancestry. I also find that I have a certain "pride"... not sure what to call it...in her Chinese ancestry. Well... pretty much equal pride in her native Filipino ancestry. I always tell my son he is descended from warriors and hunters and fishermen. I am proud of the native Filipino ancestry about equally as the Chinese ancestry. For some reason I don't care that much nor think that much of the Spanish ancestry. We call him the United Nations baby because he has 7 lines to draw on: Chinese, Filipino, Spanish, German, Dutch, French and American. At any rate, on most any form we have had to choose an ethnicity, I have always proudly selected "Asian", but have paused on occasion in considering to maybe sometime choose "Pacific Islander". But I never know for sure if he could be considered that or not. In the end we go with Asian since that is what he is listed as on all such forms.

Actually Pacific Islander would be incorrect Pacific Islander is a geographic phrase to describe the indigenous inhabitants of any of the three major sub-regions of Oceania: Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia

According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, these three regions, together with their islands, consist of:

Polynesia: The islands scattered across a tangle covering the east-central region of the Pacific Ocean. The triangle is bounded by the Hawaiian islands in the north, New Zealand in the west, and Easter Island in the east. The rest of Polynesia comprises Samoan islands (American Samoa and Samoa), the Cook Islands, French Polynesia (Tahiti and The Society Islands, Marquesas Islands, Austral Islands, and the Tuamotu Archipelago), Niue Island, Tokelau and Tuvalu, Tonga, Wallis and Futuna, and Pitcairn Island.

Melanesia: The island of New Guinea, the Bismarck and Louisiade archipelagos, the Admiralty Islands, and Bougainville Island (which make up the independent state of Maluku, Papua New Guinea), the Solomon Islands, the Santa Cruz Islands (part of the Solomon Islands), New Caledonia and Loyalty Islands, Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides), Fiji, Norfolk Island, and various smaller islands.

Micronesia: The islands of Kiribati, Nauru, the Marianas (Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands), the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, all in the Caroline Islands).

Ethnolinguistically, those Pacific Islanders who reside in Oceania are divided into two different ethnic classifications — those Austronesian peoples who speak the Oceanian languages, numbering about 2.3 million, who occupy Polynesia, Micronesia, and most of the smaller islands of Melanesia; and the Papuan peoples, those who speak the Papuan languages, who number about 7 million, and reside on the island of New Guinea and a few of the smaller islands of Melanesia located off the northeast coast of New Guinea.

Inhabitants of the following islands and regions are not considered to be Pacific Islanders: Russia's Kuril Islands, Alaska's Aleutian Islands, Taiwan, Japan, The Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia as they are not located within the three regions of Oceania (Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia

I am not an owweee gushy person, but I have to admit that is one cute baby

I never understood why our Govt spends so much money on diversity training, affirmative action , eeo etc etc, then makes sure they group people in all those neat little boxes. I think it just creates more division.

Thanks scruffydog.. :) .

this is very personal question

Why is it so personal?

We are who we are. I get asked all the time, by locals and tourist. I’m proud of my daughters heritage, no shame in that!

My daughters check Asian, Pacific Islander, Caucasian because I'm Filipino (Asian) and Chamoru (Pacific Islander), and their mother is Irish/German. When asked "what are you?", they just say "Filipino & White". They could legitimately include "Spanish" from my Mom's side, but it's meaningless since so many Filipinos claim "IMSCF".
