I saw where this post was going when you referred to the child as "it". Kids are not pets and they are not property. Diabetes is a treatable condition. They failed to obtain that treatment and let the child die. By definition, that's negligent homicide. The only way out of this is an insanity defense.

Since a pregnancy has reached viability well before 39 weeks I don't believe it would be legal in most jurisdictions to abort the pregnancy! If you are referring to a week before 'viability' and it was a woman within my sphere of influence I would use the power of my influence to try to talk her into a different option. As to public policy I would like to see affordable contraception and education regarding contraception available to all women (and men) of child-bearing age. I also would like to see quality and affordable health-care for all, decent maternal leave benefits, child-care options, etc. to help make it easier for these women to choose life.

What I'd like to call it? Perhaps your mind can't wrap itself around reality, but it is what it is. Human beings are animals. Animals that aren't always logical. After all logic and reason are something that mankind uses to explain different situations that they may not understand. Some mothers think they are doing what is best for their offspring in the actions they take, and as a mother should it not be their right to do so? Human beings are the only species on earth that interfere in parenting techniques. We like to say this is because we are beyond our animal instincts and we think at a higher level. While our brain power might be slightly higher, it's used the exact same way the rest of the animal kingdom does. We do it to empower ourselves and to control others around us. Lest we forget our rights end where theirs begin. You have no more rights than I allow you to have and me the same. You can say "she had no right to do that to her child." Well, she did and she used that right to kill that child. You may not like it, and you may want to punish her for it because YOU don't like it, but it is what it is at the end of the day and regardless what you think, there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

It is not a person's right to interfere with the well being of a child or to hinder it in any way. It doesn't matter that it was her child. You are indirectly saying that a parent has the right to murder a child, and you know that's not correct. There's a reason people get charged for child neglect. Because it's wrong, and it's illegal. To neglect the needs of a child, for whatever reason, is not okay simply because you are the parent. Your responsibilities as a human being don't suddenly disappear just because it happens to be your offspring. She was in the wrong, she caused the death of her child. Perhaps not intentionally, but it's still something that SHOULD be punished.

I don't get to slap around my kids because I want to or because it's my 'right as a parent' to do whatever I'd like. I don't get to starve my children because God's word should be enough nourishment for them. I don't get to keep my children in a cage because I feel that it will make them more appreciative, God loving adults. You can go on and on about the 'rights' this mother had, but let's not pretend she has the right to cause the death of her child.
