You would still need to prove that she can financially support you or find a sponsor. So really it's the same thing. I believe www.roadtocanada.com (?) is the website that would have more information for you.

I'm reluctant to speak in absolutes but I'm fairly sure that income requirements are waived for Canadians sponsoring spouses. I can't find it written on an official website anywhere but forums for US to Canada immigration seem to be agree on this. I could be wrong though, I'm not really familiar with it.

From:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/index.asp

If you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent resident, you are responsible for supporting your relative financially when he or she arrives. As a sponsor, you must make sure your spouse or relative does not need to seek financial assistance from the government.

From:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5196ETOC.asp#table3

Size of Family Unit Minimum necessary income

1 person (the sponsor) $22,637

2 persons $28,182

3 persons $34,646

4 persons $42,065

5 persons $47,710

6 persons $53,808

7 persons $59,907

More than 7 persons, for each additional person, add $6,099

Looks like a lot more than the US sponsor needs to make

I did mention this in one of my earlier posts. Packet 3 and 4 DO NOT take 6 months in Montreal! They take about 4-6 weeks. I got a K1 from Montreal last year and it only took 8 months from start to finish.

Alizon: thanks for the clarification re: NVC and interview scheduling.

I followed a couple, he was in Texas, like my finace was, and she was Canada, like I was. The sent the petition 4 weeks before us, I was already approved ( Oct. ) when she was just getting her pkg 4. I was moving to USA (- March, ) and she was still a few weeks from her interview in Montreal. So yes, when I went through the process this was the time line. I hope the OP does up his timeline and he can get better and current information from it.

That is specific to Quebec- only Quebec residents have to meet an income requirement. All other provinces you merely need to prove that you can meet basic necessities and you're not receiving social assistance. So, you still financially sponsor them, it's just not as stringent.

Link: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/op/op02-eng.pdf Check pages 42 and 43.

"Sponsors of dependent children and of spouses, common-law partners or conjugal partners

(unless they have dependent children who have dependent children of their own) do not have to

meet financial requirements, but they do undertake to provide for the basic necessities of the

sponsored applicants so that the applicants do not need social assistance. Applicants may be

refused for financial reasons under A39 if they are unable or unwilling to support themselves and

their dependent children and there are not adequate arrangements for their care and support.

Officers should take into consideration the sponsor's financial situation and willingness to assist,

as well as the financial situation or employment prospects of the applicant, if applicable."

Thanks a lot, guys (: . Now, it's just a matter of time and doing a bit of research on my own around here. In a couple of months, I can start the process! I'll probably lurk around in the mean time.. Everyone here seems really nice. Aside from doing research, the stories here are really inspiring.

Definitely clueless.

lol you're not! It's good info! I'm pretty sure I saw all of this when we were looking into him coming up here. The page I read is misleading, unless I'm just way too tired

Haha, no, it is misleading and not all that clear. Just like most other Canadian government websites :/ I wasn't that sure of it myself.

The conclusion of the discussion on that last link you posted says that you don't have to meet an income requirement in Quebec for a spouse or for your own children. Here's the link that the discussion ends on (spouse is missing from the list of people requiring financial resources): http://www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/en/immigrate-settle/sponsors-sponsored/requirements-sponsor/prerequisites.html

If you sponsor your father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, a dependent child who has a child or a close relative who is a minor and an orphan, you must prove that you have at your disposal sufficient financial resources for the duration of the undertaking (see financial standards).

Y'all scared me there for a second re: moving back to Quebec. :)

I’m Canadian and my husband is American and we are in the process of what you want to do. We married in the USA 2 yrs ago but started the I 130 in dec 2018 and waiting to get approval. I visit back and forth for a week to two weeks at a time every few months. It’s hard but I have not been harassed yet at the border, but I always bring documents just in case to show I have status here in Canada and don’t plan to live in the US until the process is complete.
