Just got home....whew. Not a good commuter day in the ATL...

Left home with plenty of time (I thought). Arrived at about 10:20 for a 10:45 appointment. Got off to an unnerving start. The man behind me waiting to go through security decided to reach past me to get a plastic bin to put his things in. Security guy freaked out on him, and even though the man didn't mouth off or anything, the guard was threatening to put him out of the building, and even said "We'll shoot you." (Seriously... he said that.) All the guy did was reach for a plastic bin like at airport security, so he could start putting his stuff in it :-/ The man didn't exactly apologize but he did as he was told. The guard kept going on and on - "This isn't the mall"... "You don't grab anything, we do that.".... Surprised the heck out of me. When I was there last for an Infopass, all of the personnel were so nice. This guy was ready to find a reason to throw the guy out. Sheesh... SO - wait for instructions and a bin... do NOT reach for a bin... you've been warned! :)

I was already a bit edgy - that didn't help. I was ahead of that man but I probably looked like a deer in the headlights as I waited for the guard to hand me a bin. ;)

Got through security without further incident, made the obligatory potty-stop that always comes immediately after a long drive *g*... checked in at reception. Got ticket number R92 at 10:35 and was instructed to go to the third floor. There were about 30-40 people there (room was maybe 1/3 full). One by one, agents would appear and call a number - not all in order. They were on R76 when I got there, and the 70-numbers went up and down, then into the 80s, back to the 70s and so-on. I was there right about an hour before my number was called.

I was interviewed by Ms. McClain - very nice lady (very tall!), she helped put me at ease, she was very personable. We went to her office, and she asked me to put down my things and remain standing as she asked me to swear to tell the truth. Then I sat and she asked me for my GC, Passport and Driver's license. I mentioned straight away that I had 2 trips to Canada to disclose since my application (before I forgot LOL)- she acknowledged that and said we'll get to it, and thanked me for mentioning it.

She then handed me several papers and asked me to write my A number and the date on them, which I did (they had the questions and stuff on them - but I didn't have time to read them over). She went over some of the stuff on my application and cut out the photos I'd submitted with my application. When she got to the part about my marital status (divorced), she asked if I had a copy of my divorce decree - which I was never asked for, but I brought, "just in case" (so if one's marital status has changed since obtaining GC - it's a good idea to bring documents!) She took a copy of my decree and placed it with my file.

Then she asked me 6 civics questions - I don't recall what all of them were... one was "What does the Cabinet do?", another was. "If the President and Vice President can no longer serve?" For the life of me I can't remember the rest of them - but I got all 6 right. I was keeping count on my fingers LOL!

Then she handed me a paper and asked me to read, "What is the capital?" or something to that effect, and then asked me to write, "Washington, DC is the capital."

Moments later she congratulated me, said I'd been recommended for approval, someone had to take a look at the file, and I could go to the second floor to wait for the Oath letter.

About 20 minutes later, my name was called for the oath letter - January 25th at 8:00 AM. Woohoo! I'm almost there! :dance:

I remembered one more of the questions (it's all a blur)... one was, "What did the Declaration of Independence do?"

That's 3... I can't remember the other 3... but at least I remembered to answer them correctly!

Didn't log here for sometime as I was back to my country for a long visit.

I see almost all the list is red:)

Today we had out ROC interview, and since it was the same office and our Citizenship was pending due to the AOS error, the officer went ahead and did the wife's citizenship interview. I feel sorry for the officer having to listen to our son cry and squirm, it was well past his nap time, and he started having a cold last night. Went very smooth we did the ROC interview, then they asked me to go back to waiting room, did the citizenship test with my wife, called me back in to make a copy of our son's medical records since we had stayed out of the country for more than 6 months waiting to find out if he was going to need an operation.

They gave her a paper letting her know she is recommended for citizenship, and we are now waiting for the oath letter. Took us a few months longer than expected, but everything is looking good.

How was the ceremony?? Did you take pictures?? Tell all!!!

It's been a long, but good day. I had to come to work after my Oath Ceremony so I didn't have time to elaborate. I'm still at work but there's an invisible ice storm so people are staying home :)

Ceremony was really nice. 154 people from 53 countries. We got there in just under an hour (versus 90 minutes the other day!) so we were way too early, so we went and got a bite at a nearby restaurant. Checked in through security at about 7:30 AM for 8:00 ceremony. Well, the ceremony started at 9, the hour between is for agents to check people in, go over the questions on the back of the oath letter and such. Then row by row we went from the waiting area into the ceremony room. We each checked in at the desk there, and they showed us our certificates to make sure they were correct. Then we were given a numbered card and sat in the seat corresponding to the number. That allows them to put the certificates in order to be handed out at the end.

The gentleman officiating at the ceremony was really nice. He was "macgyvering" a microphone and cracked a joke about the department not having any money. He also assured us that we'd be citizens soon, and we'd be "outta here" before the weather event.

Family members not being sworn in are asked to wait on the 3rd floor, the ceremony room is on the second. Family/friends are brought in just before the ceremony starts, and they sit at the back of the room, but can move freely around the room to take pictures, which was nice.

We were shown a video set to music, showing quotations from naturalized citizens, photos etc. Then we stood for the National Anthem. The MC then announced how many people there were and how many countries, and as he called out each country, anyone from that country was asked to stand, and we applauded for every one.

Then we took out our oath cards from the packet provided (there's an envelope of stuff and a small American flag on each chair as we were seated), we repeated the oath with the MC, and we're sworn in. I was choked up. Most of the people around me were pretty unemotional but there was a lady in the row before me and a couple of seats over, and she glanced my way at some point - she was all verklempt too... so we smiled at one another and sniffled LOL!

Afterward, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and saw a video from President Obama, and the ceremony concluded with Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" (If you didn't cry before that...!) Then we each went up to receive our certificate, and if people wanted to stay and take more pictures, they could do that too.

It was a very nice, very appropriate and very emotional ceremony.

Hard to believe my journey is over now! Well... there's still the DMV, passport, Social Security office etc.... but the difficult stuff is all done now.

I am an American! Woohoo!
