Student Visa, criminal record

I have a record from about 6 years ago for a small shoplifting offence in South Africa.

Since that time I have earned my bachelor's degree in South Africa and am going to Finland to do my masters degree.

I have the option to do a semester on exchange and one of the options is the USA.

I know each case is separate and the interviewer can use their discretion whether to issue a visa or not.

I would just like to know from anyone in the know what the chances of getting a visa as an exchange student for 5 months or so based on the record and what I have education I have received since?

Appreciate the advice

I doubt you would be able to obtain a non-immigrant visa with criminal record existed. You can try it won't hurt (fees only) As you said, it depends on IO discretion.
