they say soda around here.. never heard anyone use the word pop..

I looked at the Pop/Soda/Coke map and it seems there is a north/south divide between soda and pop with the southern states saying coke and New England using soda.

Which is why you hear soda and my husband from the Pacific North West says pop and because I have no idea what it is called anywhere just say drink.

But I thought pop was more West Coast and soda more East Coast.

LOTS of Americans say pop: http://popvssoda.com:2998/countystats/total-county.html

But it's soda.

EDIT: Oops, you posted about the map before I got to!

The big middle yellow section is Missouri and southern Illinois. I guess they say soda in St. Louis. Though I guess there's one little yellow section in Nebraska too.

Oh HUGGLES congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like this topic!!!!

I will see how much my life will change.. I am from Brazil living in Canada for two year and now going to States, hope I wont change too much ad yes, i do like shopping :) ..

Congrats for the baby, hugglebuggles :) ..

Cheers,

Thanks gals!! :D

I started saying "sodie pop" and it seems to work  Hubby says pop, all my coworkers say soda, so I'm not sure what the norm is. I had to abandon my Canadian spellings and "zed" because of work. People would think I was making spelling mistakes... I also got some very long pauses and confused looks from customers and coworkers when I would pull out a zed.

lol we live in one of the Yellow counties in Wi... so it's Soda there, but DH grew up in southern Illinois. His county seems to say no one says "pop".. but we lived there last year and "pop" was the majority of what I heard.

I go back and forth at home... but I still tend to specify flavor, since sometimes we have more than one option and it's easier to ask "do you want a rootbeer?" cause if I ask if he wants pop, he'll ask what kind. LOL

I hear both but what get's e a long look is when I say 'soft drink' because that is what we always called it when we were growing up in Eastern Ontario. Makes sense because it is opposed to a 'hard drink' that contained alcohol- soft drinks are alcohol free :D .

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

That's funny! I went to McDonald's on Friday and the sever asked me if I wanted a soft drink with my meal. I paused for a second while trying to decide exactly what she meant...

Being a border-living person I learned to say soda years ago. I have now learned not to say washroom, tap, or faucett. Or brown toast. lol

Ya I had odd looks with washroom.....it's restroom.....well i'm be dipped in sh#$#t, ok restroom

i just tested the tap and brown toast on my wife...although i stopped with the brown toast a while back....so yup, tap means to tap on things ie finger on desk....faucet is known....brown toast = burned toast??? so no brown toast

also with the word foyer....as in the French pronunciation = foi yay....here's is foyer like sawyer.....garage i say it like formage....french again....here it;s garge G. just ends with the soft g sound. giddyap

forgot to add... i say sorry as in soar eee.....here's is saw ree... and i guess we all say oot and aboot for out and about...so i hear
