Hey y'all....

I just got off of the phone with Amed, and he just found out that his brother, the one family member who can come to the US using the VWP (he's a French citizen), can't come to the wedding which is in 3 weeks. This whole time, we thought he was coming, were excited about his visit, were trying to make all of the arrangements for tux, etc. Now Amed will have no family members here.

He loves my family and has gotten to be friends with my friends, but I feel SO bad for him. I just don't know what to do to make him feel better and to make him feel more like it's his wedding, too, and not just mine. He's met a couple of Algerians at the mosque, and I asked him to invite them, and he may do so. But do any of you have any other suggestions as to how I can make the best out of this situation?

It just breaks my heart that he's come all this way, spent all of this time planning for this day, and he doesn't have one family member who can be here. I know most of you can relate, so thanks in advance!

We didn't invite anyone from either of our families  We're planning later, when we have the money inshaAllah, to have a wedding party here for our friends and family here and a wedding party in Egypt for his friends and family.

Maybe planning a party for the future in his home town will cheer him up?

My brother has just run into the same problem with his fiance. She is really sad and depressed, and now they are just considering going to the justice of the peace to do the ceremony with no family. My brother feels bad not to have us there, but he feels bad that she just isn't into the ceremony.

So this got me thinking...and maybe this is really a stupid idea, but what if the ceremony was at a place that had an internet connection, and you had the headsets and webcams.

Sorry, this really is lame, but I have nothing better to offer.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

That's not lame at all.

When Abdel and I first met they included me via webcam and headphones in his nephew's birthday party. It really made me feel like a part of the family, except that when they all took turns coming to the computer to say hi to me all I could think was "Blow out the candles already before the cake catches on fire!" I could see it in the background and it was driving me nuts.

Wadi didn't seem too upset by it, we just knew that's the way it would have to be. He had a friend that he knew from his home town who lives in Philadelphia drive up for the reception as well as a new friend from Boston.

We didn't have any family at our marriage ceremony in Egypt... we were alone there and when we go the courthouse to get our marriage license here it'll just be a formality so no need to have any family there for that either.

We would have liked if our family would have been there for our marriage ceremony but it wasn't what Allah willed. He had to travel to meet me and his family members who wanted to join him were unable to in the end.

I talk to them online from time to time and they'd like me to visit there but understand it's not possible right now.

I'd like to have a cookout or something for my family when he's here... just to kind of announce it and make it 'official' but it's not like it's a secret or anything... everyone knows I'm married already :P

I didn't have any family at my wedding - it was in Australia. I was really crushed at first. I mean, I 'm the girl, I should have family there...but I quickly got over it. All I wanted was to be married to him...and I realized it really didn't matter WHO was there.

I'm sure that he'll realize that too - and be fine. If he has any friends at all stateside - invite them - that's a great idea!

good luck :)

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

My husband and I had a different situation, but I think it might help a little bit.

His mother and father were supposed to come to our wedding but his father passed away less than two months before. His mother came a week before the wedding and stayed a month. He had a lot of friends at the wedding, actually he had more guests thatn I did, but he was still sad that his brother and sisters couldn't make our wedding.(they applied for visas but were denied) So we had our wedding video taped and gave his mother a DVD to take home with her. We also decided to have a wedding in Morocco next year when we are there.

The one thing we are very happy about though is that we got married in the Mosque(Feb.) prior to his fathers death and his father gave us his blessings because he knew that we loved each other.

Whatever you two decide to do, I wish you both the best of luck in your life together.
