I had my N-400 interview yesterday, based on 5 month of residence. I have never left the country for longer than 30 days, my total absence was less than 4 months. Everything went well, I passed tests. I was a bit intimidated by the IO, she seemed very hostile, not friendly at all. She proceeded to asking me questins from my application. Asked me if I was married, to which I answered yes, asked name of my husband, name of my previous husband, name of my husband's ex wife, her last name and when they were divorced. I think I made a mistake by answering the question about the divorce incorrectly but I told her that I don't remember. She wanted to see my marriage certificate which of course I did not have with me, so she gave me N-14 (request to send the copy of the certificate in mail). I signed some papers and my photos. Came back home and mailed it right away.

My question is: what does my marriage certificate have to do with my citizenship? For how long do you think I will be waiting for my oath letter?

I though my case was so solid! Continuous residence, never had to deal with the police, not even a parking ticken during my 8 years in the US, pay my taxes on time. I am very upset, I planned a trip all over Europe July hoping to have an American apssport by then, hoping I won't need any visas and now it might not happen :(.

I think the IO had a bad day

No kidding! She seemed to hate her job. I remember how awesome IO officer was at my green card interview, all smiling and polite and friendly.

She did mention that June oath ceremony was almost full in my city, but I might be able to get a spot there... so hopefully, she plans on coming back to my case soon, hope it will not be buried at her desk for months.

At my 5 year based interview the IO wanted to take a look at my divorce papers and my SSN card. Luckily I came prepared and had with me everything she wanted to see.

Sorry to hear about your experience. As far as I know, they do the oath ceremonies in Buffalo at least twice a month, and also there are places in Rochester and other WNY cities.

I'm sorry you had an unpleasant experience. I always feel badly when i hear people say this becuse i had such a great IO. He was pleasant, professional and funny. I wish i could tell you that everything will be ready in time for your trip. Now you also have to take into consideration that if you decide to go on vacation, you could be schefuled for your oath at that time. Hopefully eveything works out for you. It sucks when you do everything right and this happens. Let us know how it works out. Our fingers are crossed for you. Smile.

Correction: scheduled
