But she's not using it, she lives in Luxemburg. It's basically just making it easier for her to move back and not have to have a 'waiting period' which i've heard they don't really stick to anyways.

There are many others that are non residents of Canada that have been using the health care system when they are no longer entitled to it! Who knows if they are truly cracking down, but it makes sense to.

She doesn't use it. I know it's wrong but she's an adult and makes her own choices. I think we found something that may cover her:

She thinks she is coming on a TD visa. Anyone have experience with that kind of insurance? It looks pretty good for her situation:

1500$ deductible, 15% for maternity/delivery

She never told them she was leaving so her address is still in BC. I told her a while back she needed to cancel it but she didn't do it.

Sorry to go off topic but I would gladly pay some taxes to the Canadian government to still be able to access Canadian health care. Citizenship should entitle someone to health care, not residency.

I was wondering what the husband would be doing about health coverage between date of starting job and date of starting insurance. He should really make sure bith dates are the same - otherwise if something happens how would he pay?

They aren't coming until August so they will have coverage before they arrive - as far as I know

That's good news - so have they specifically contacted the insurance company (or maybe the HR person would for them) to ensure their birth and prenatal costs are covered?

Insurance is better than no insurance.......but one can quickly find out some are pretty much worthless.....So 1 is best to investigate what it covers!!

Good advice. Typical insurance plans cover about 80% or 90% of births/hospital visits, so they should be prepared to pay the difference.

My insurance covers 100%, but it's pretty rare. They should also find out if it's EPO, PPO, HMO etc. so they can find a doctor in network if they have to. If they give birth at a hospital or doctor out of network, insurance won't matter! Most of the time it's pretty easy to find someone in network, but depends on where they will be living.

Yep, one has to know the difference between a PPO, HMO, etc etc etc!! As you can ask the question--Do you Accept my Insurance??? And they can say yes and one soon finds out that just because they accept it--means very little!! I found out the hard way with a dentist! Which wasn't too bad, as I caught it. Luckily found a dentist that was within my plan! Was only a $6000 difference,lol Just another frustration!
