I agree less is more as they do not want to waste too much time reading a letter. But starting off the letter with thanking the Officer for spending time reading the letter will have them feeling appreciated.

Then should this JUST be an update, or a "condensation" of the whole thing? Shall I assume that he has seen/read the one that was sent electronically with my DS-230?

The letter should contain the most important facts, if 5 pages then they will most likely not read but a few paragraphs if any.

Put yourself in their position and you had so many interviews to perform and so little time to complete, they already to seem to be in a bad mood as it is.

Also, anything included may be a question to your wife.

Oh yeah, I have pared down my EOR to 1 & 1/2 pages. It originally started out with "It was a dark and stormy night...." and "once upon a time....." Seriously, I just followed up on what I previously said in the "How we met" section on the original petition.

I made a point of sharing it with my betrothed, she may get a question out of it.......

I think it depends on the person receiving the documents. My wife (then fiancee) had a guy who took everything she gave him.

My 2-page not-notarized EOR was taken on intake day and ended up being the first document in the sealed brown envelop. The POE officer actually glanced through my EOR when he opened the brown envelop. I was with my then fiancee at the POE and witnessed it. I was very happy that my "fine essay" was read by a few people

I had 2 copies of everything just in case. My wife turned in one copy at the intake, and had another copy with my original signature for the interview in case the VO wants it.

If I remember correctly, she even turned in a copy of her resume at intake.

So in our case, my EOR was NOT notarized, and it was turned in at intake.
