Horror's best: 10 films that make the cut

Saw needs to be on the list as well.

I have not seen that one. I thought it looked too gruesome to watch. I don't think a good horror film has to be all that graphic to scare the sh!t out of you.

It is not like a slasher film. It is very psychological. I would highly recommend it.

I didn't think too much of Saw. I watched it after hearing good things and was greatly disappointed by the screenplay. The trailer had an interesting premise - where a guy is faced with the "Mad Max" choice of cutting through his own leg with a hacksaw or dying. Unfortunately when he does it, its at a point in the script where it has become completely irrelevant.

Saw is not too different from an indie movie called Cube. See both and compare.

I don't find a lot of today's horror movies to be particularly scary. They assault the audience with extremely graphic scenes extreme physical torture - Hostel would be a recent example of this. Not tense so much as plain brutal (lazy film-making IMO). I mean, compare it to Jaws where you don't actually see the shark until the last 30 minutes, or anything by Hitchcock. Creating tension and fear is a lot different from brutalising the audience with scenes of violence. I would actually add that the latter is not too dissimilar to porn.

 The types of horror films today don't require any imagination from the audience...very passive...very unsatisfying.

I do not know if these qualify as the best horror movies, but George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" and Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" sure were influential to the genre and deserve to be mentioned.

Well, anything with Bruce Campbell in it *has* to make the list ;)

And Joan Crawford is scary, no matter what movie she was in!

I like the old black and white classic horror films. They're not particularly scary by today's standards, but the classic monsters like Lon Cheney, and Jr., Bela Lugosi (he's dead you know ;) ) etc and their ilk. We have a boxed set of all the oldies but goodies, and miniature busts of Frankenstien's Monster, the Werewolf and Dracula, sitting atop our computer monitor.

And of course, horror great Vincent Price. He's the one who got me hooked.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

The Blair Witch Project:

by far the scarious movie I've seen.........

My favorite scary movie, although the second one stunk!

thanks for the movie suggestions alot out there I haven't seen or want to see again.

Here's another one to add to the list... the original psycho.

Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates

That scene when they find his mummified "mother" still scares me..

I didn't find "The Devil's Rejects" particularly scary - it worked quite well as an exploitation film where you end up feeling sympathy for the killers, despite the terrible stuff they've done. It was actually quite clever in that regard - although "The Last House On The Left" is arguably better.

The (original) Texas Chainsaw Massacre IS scary - and doesn't actually rely on scenes of graphic torture, which the current remakes seem to pander to.

I didn't think it was scary either, just bloody.

Much as I love Rob Zombie's music, his movies leave a lot to be desired IMO.

These are all Western made films. They are no where as scary as foreign films. Especially those from Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong! Rated R films over here is almost Rated PG over there.

I refuse to accept a top ten horror list that doesn't include The Fog, The Thing, or Session 9 on it. :innocent:

Ha! You're right there. I watched Ju-On: The Curse and was really surprised by some of the stuff it got away with, considering it was a made for tv movie.
