The Philadelphia Nativist Riots

http://www.aoh51fishtown.com/id21.html

Thanks for posting this, it goes a long way towards showing how conflicts are so often the byproduct of diversity....even between Europeans of differing ethnicities.

I mean here you have people of similar cultures similar faiths, similar family structures and common understanding of morals and vocation and still you had such turmoil.

As we know the Gov't in it's wisdom changed immigration policy before too much blood was spilled. Imagine if instead these groups had been Jamaicans, Egyptians, Cambodians and Pakistanis. Granted the choice of eateries would have been better but it's hard to believe peace would have broken out.

And as we all know it took decades even for these European differences to be overcome by a country. The true meaning of "one nation" was seen by the world

during WW2.

I credit two things to the unity this country developed.

1. Immigration was cut way back.

2. The public school system. Without that it is very likely schools of all ethic flavors would have took it's place.

In fact many whole towns were dominated by germans, scottish, French etc. because just like today, people tended to migrate to places or neighborhoods where people "like them" lived.

Sadly today we are going backwards, it's unreal how just in the last few decades.... how polarizing we have become. NOt just along racial lines either, we can't even agree on common morals anymore. Our politics and now social life has pitted more and more groups at odds with other. Based on everything from Guns to sodomy to skin color to language diet and what to wear when you get your photo for a drivers license.

We are stridently divided on when to go to war.... when does an unborn baby have rights or should we even drill for oil not to mention how many people constitute a marriage.

Hell even border security is a flash point.

Half the country wants a Nanny-State the other wants to scale back Govt by epic proportions

.....and on and on.

Thanks steve.

Still posting but not answering the fundamental questions this thread was based on.

Well, I guess something better than nothing.

Which 'fundamental' question would that be? The most obvious could be why 'Top right-wing group' members have such a severely flawed perception of american values?! The second could be why are they such racists?!

Your 'questions' can hardly be described accurately as 'fundamental'! The questions are flawed from the outset in their implied presuppositions. Like asking someone if they have stopped beating their wife?!!

Since you are stumbling, let me repost the questions.

Certain claims were made such as:

the USA is being transformed by immigrants who do not share those values, and who have high rates of illiteracy, illegitimacy, and gang crime, and they will vote Democrat when the Democrats promise them more food stamps

Are they in fact less likely to claim the American flag as their sole loyalty?

Are they more likely to be illiterate... which translates "taker" rather than giver?

Are they more likely to be in gangs and crime?

Or have more fatherless children which become wards of the state and then... the criminal justice system?

Do they in fact vote for the candidates which promise more govt dependency or less?

Yes

No

No

No

They come here to work and provide a better opportunity for their families. They vote for candidates that promise broad opportunity.

The whole notion that immigrants are food stamp collecting gang bangers is complete bullshite. There is absolutely no evidence that supports this.

The Cato Institute found that:

Immigrants Prefer Work

Immigrants come to America today to build a better life through work, not welfare, just as they have throughout American history. We can see evidence of this in their labor-force participation rates as well as their gravitation toward states that offer the best prospects for employment, not welfare benefits.

The typical foreign-born adult resident of the United States today is more likely to participate in the work force than the typical native-born American. According to the U.S. Department of Labor (2011), the labor-force participation rate of the foreign-born in 2010 was 67.9 percent, compared to the native-born rate of 64.1 percent. The gap was especially high among men. The labor-force participation rate of foreign-born men in 2010 was 80.1 percent, a full 10 percentage points higher than the rate among native-born men.

Danno completely fails to accurately portray historic issues with immigration, such as like thinking persons such as himself who view America as theirs, and new immigrants as 'outsiders,' tending to create the biggest problems. Not the newest immigrants themselves. Look at Irish immigrants Danno, and the acceptance obstacles they faced. Just one example, but unfortunately Danno-logic will prevent you from seeing the utter nonsense of your statements and positions in this thread.

Assimilation does indeed take time, but the historic record clearly illustrates that each waive of immigrants eventually does assimilate, prosper, and in doing so enriches our nation. All the while persons such as you complain, or worse, only to end up time and again proved wrong.

You are getting a little far-afield here.

Only a fool would deny certain demographics be they race, income level, educational level, etc tend to follow certain voting paths.

The op observed that do to a number of factors the minorities overwhelmingly vote for more and more gov't and undeniable consume more gov't.

When we enlarge a voting group via importation ... we change the direction of governance.

Why are simple observations so difficult to entertain?

Mayor Nagan in New Orleans certainly understood this when he took proactive steps to make sure N.O. remained a "Chocolate City" after so many black Left and many working Hispanics arrived.

Was he racist?

Which 'fundamental' question would that be? The most obvious could be why 'Top right-wing group' members have such a severely flawed perception of american values?! The second could be why are they such racists?!

Oh the racist thing..... so original.
