After the chaos of the mass waves of immigration the door was nearly closed in fact one year we had more people leave than come.

It was not until 1965 that the immigration policy was changed.... though it promised a country of nearly 90% white that the composition would not change. (you can't believe politicians and most defiantly lib-politicians).... it most certainly has changed.

So lets be honest steve, post 1965... thats when we became a "nation of immigrants" in the broad sense you imply.

And of course the case could be made that every place in the world is made up of immigrants as people have always migrated or took over other lands and in that sense the USA is no different.

We crowded out the Native Americans (who did the same to each other) and soon with unchecked immigration we too shall be crowded out.

I got a lot of enterprises going on, when I get in this room I waste too much time and with the diminishing head count, the fun meter is not as high as in times past.

Not only that but too many people here are cry babies, when you get a quote from a Supreme Court Justice removed for being offensive... you know this train is near the end of the line.

Utter ignorance. We are not defined by where our new immigrants come from beyond the fact that we were a nation that was born out of immigrants. Their is no superiority of ethnicity in this country, no one ethnic group that you can use as a poster child of this nation's identity because our national identity isn't defined by what we look like, but by an idea - maybe if you think about that idea, you'll realize what that idea was and is. Nothing has ever been static in this country beyond that, no matter how much nativism becomes a driving force behind our immigration policies.

I wasn't actually thinking of abortion, I was referring to the contraceptives and family planning that agencies like that provide. I should have been more clear. If lower income people can not afford birth control, guess what happens?

If I've learned anything on VJ, it's that my Korean-Cherokee-German American boyfriend and I (Irish-Scottish-Belgian-Basque-Mexican American) should start breeding pronto so we can make a very threatening infant, raise it on food stamps, and inculcate it with our pinko views so that it will ultimately overthrow capitalism and form a socialist government in the US. While it's still in diapers.

You have to realize that the Immigration act of 1924 (that was replaced in 1965) actually didn't limit the immigration of those from Latin America.

So technically speaking, the point you are making on American culture is kind of moot. We'd still have the same infux of immigrants from south of the border even without the Immigration Act of 1965.

Every immigration act has national quotas, based in part on the need to put them there. The act provided for a ratio.... of Europeans to non-europeans.

Immigration policy is an ever growing or changing policy which SHOULD BE based on the NEEDS of the country and how well those immigrating will "fit" in.

What we have now is an experiment based on the untested belief that all peoples from the most diverse cultures will somehow meld into one nation of people.

Someone tell me what successful model it is we are following?

Look around the world, it is cultural, racial, religious and ethnic differences which are a part of every river of blood that flows.... but we are going to be the exception based on what?

Steve and others like to pretend that this country has always been a country of "immigrants" rather than European immigrants which shared many common, basic views and even so look at the conflicts those waves brought.

Steve wants to believe that this country, our Founding Government our laws and our values were in fact a collection of influences from all around the world.

You want to 'help' people? Create job training programs and help people find jobs. Don't hold them back by offering hand outs.

Wrong. Stop all government "help" immediately and the problem will handle itself. People can't find their own job? Then they can't feed their kids. Their kids will die. They won't grow up stupid.
