To the Fil-Am parents, would you give your child the pinay mom's maiden name as his/her middle name? Like how it is as a tradition in the Philippines?

Example: James Gonzales Smith (Gonzales is the mom's maiden name)

Also, in the Philippines it is very common that people have 2 first names, and then their mom's maiden name as the middle name. Example: James Carter Gonzales Smith (James Carter being the first names). Would you give your baby 2 names and a middle name?

I'm asking these questions 'cause I'm pregnant and I'm trying to decide if I should go by the Philippine tradition of giving my maiden name to my kid as his/her middle name. And I also like 2 first names. I'm curious what others here think.

And what Mr. Smith says about that? This is definitely more important than what the people on this board think, IMO.

I have 2 sons, one has 2 first names, mom's maiden name and my last name. The other has 3 first names, mom's maiden name and my last name. I don't see a problem with it, 3 names is common in the US and 4 isn't unheard of. The Philippines custom isn't terribly out of line, as middle names are often family names. And in parts of the US the custom is similar. However, I do agree with the other poster, Mr. Smith's opinion counts significantly :)

Well, of course we've discussed about it already. He doesn't like the idea of using my maiden name as the middle name for all our children(assuming we'll be blessed with more than 1) mainly because he's worried our kids might get teased for having a middle name that sound different from the majority, but says he won't oppose it if that's what I really want to do.

When we had our first baby my hubby didnt like the idea of using my maiden name as my baby's middle name bcoz he said thats not how it works here...but of course i insisted to use my maiden name as middle name. About having 2 first names...i actually have two first names and when i got here...most of my paperworks (except uscis papers) they only use my first name not the second one. I got used to it and now everytime i sign any papers i only write one first name. My hubby has one first name too...so we only gave our baby boy one first name and so as our baby girl. :)

my husband don't like the thought of using my maiden name as our baby's middle name even if I want to, he didn't like that if we have 3 kids they gonna have the same middle name.

Our first son Waylon was born in the U.S.A. and doesn't carry his mothers maiden name. Our second son Willie has only one first name and carries his mothers maiden name as his middle name. I tried to give Willie my fathers name as his middle name, but the Civil Reistar's office in San Carlos wouldn't accept the application being sent to the NSO without the mothers maiden name being included in his name. I didn't want his entire name to be too long, so no 2 first names.

We will stick to her 2 names since I already have a problem with my maiden name as my middle name :girlwerewolf2xn: . I know in the Philippines we use our mother's maiden name as our middle name when we are still single, then we just change it when we become married and use our father's last name to our new middle name. Too complicated, specially that you can't do that here in the United States, You can't change your middle name just like that here. Now I'm still using my mother's maiden name as my middle name since that's what it is in my GC and in my Social Security.

That weird, I had read that "officially" the government in the Phils no longer requires the middle name be the mothers maiden name and middle names can be whatever. I can believe it though as that has been the tradition for ages.

Same here...The USCIS used my mother's maiden name as my middle name when they issued my GC so I'm stuck with that unless i'm going to have it change during my Citizenship interview.
